OG Paint: 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302

This 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302 maintains its original paint and impressively low mileage of just 36,000. The seller notes it remained with one owner through 2014, and has made stops with two additional owners since then. The mechanical systems have been refreshed while leaving the original exterior finish in place, and we’re grateful the cosmetics remain well-preserved. Find the Mustang here on eBay with a $49,500 asking price and the option to submit a best offer.

The Mustang has some interesting anecdotes in its history file, mostly related to a replacement service block installed sometime in the 70s. The car fits its period of manufacture well, with rear window louvers and bright yellow paint with black trim. The original Argent Magnum wheels remain bolted to the car, and the seller notes all trim and ID tags remain attached to the car with no signs of alteration.

The interior is stunning as well, with near-perfect bucket seats up front and a backseat that has clearly seen very little use. The seller notes it is the Deluxe interior, with headrests, low-back seats, center console, and clock,  and aside from some holes in the headliner, no real cosmetic issues to complain about. The owner’s manuals, inspection card, and build sheet all remain with the car as well.

The seller notes a replacement block in the car’s history file, but that it was rebuilt the right way, with all of the original accessories and components being re-attached. The heads, intake, carburetor, distributor, heat shields, snorkel, air cleaner – and more – were all re-used when the engine was put back together. The engine was rebuilt in the last two years, and the seller says it runs and drives perfectly. Throw in the manual gearbox and you have a very desirable car.

This car is nearly identical to the one I used to get taken to our local race track in the early 70s – My dads friends son was 12 years older than me ( I was 12) ) and he would pick his dad and then me up every Saturday night .Every time I see a yellow 70 Boss 302 it brings back some happy memories .

Even in yellow this thing looks bad ass. I hope this does not get restored.

What do you mean “even in yellow?” Yellow is the best color for these cars, with the contrasting black trim. And the Bud Moore BOSS 302 team cars that won Trans-Am — they were School Bus Yellow!!!

I’d have to disagree that the floor has just surface rust. The front torque box pictured looks shot too as does the front frame rail where it attaches to the floor. That said I believe it is still a fair BIN price.

Take care of the structural issues before they get worse, then drive and enjoy.

Beautiful car, I think originality is worth a premium but to me it’s a hard sell on this one. Interior is nice and it seems well kept but it has a LOT of rust when you study the pics. I’m a Mustang guy and it seems to have all the usual rust issues just in this case it’s on a unmolested body. For me the rust issues would take away the appeal of having a car that original, ultimately it needs a full rests on the body.

I know the replacement block will turn many off but I don’t see that as that huge of a deal as long as the engine is correct otherwise which this one is. Replacement blocks are very common on Boss 302s

I bought one in 1970 with the original blown motor in the trunk, and a light side-swipe on the passenger side for…… $300! Long story behind it, but I took the center caps off and gave them to a buddy, and sold the car for $500. Never even had to move the car. Pretty fast $200 back in those days for an 18-year old!

I like it, prefer the 69 over the 70. I like your opinions on the price. Fix the rust and drive. hate to pick it apart, but the dist is incorrect; should have a mechanical advance vs the external 2 port advance shown here. Unless this is part of the smog package; worked on a 70 that had the mechanical advance. The correct dist was seized in the block as a lot of them did. The performance of the 70 is mind blowing, Ford rated it at 300 HP.Grossly understated. Road testing was the best part of the Job!! Good luck to the new owner. Better wear a neck brace…

The Boss 302 was factory rated at 290 HP in ’69 and ’70.

Just like the Z-28 was rated at 290 HP. That was to fool the insurance folks and the Trans-Am governing body. A Z-28 was much closer to a true 330 HP. I was lucky enough to own both a 1969 Z-28 and a 1970 Boss 302. 290 was a very conservative estimate for both. And yes, I was a moron for not keeping them both. Next time I’ll keep them.

My uncle currently has a Calypso Coral ’69 Boss 302 and is a former owner of a Grabber Blue ’70 Boss 302.

I’m well aware they were under rated from the factory.

My response above was just to clarify that the 300 HP rating that GPC quoted was incorrect.

Rusty. And the rev limiter is MIA, probably why it has a replacement block. A lot of needs here. Not as good a deal as it appears.

But it’s nice to see a low mileage Boss in good condition,I would have more miles on the odometer and kept up on rust issues because they were made to drive and enjoy! Not crazy about yellow but it’s an eye catcher.

I wonder why it’s parked on a frame bench?

I like the clean hood with no shaker hood scoop, just my own taste I guess. One things for sure that Ford really built some killer looking Mustangs in ’69-70, some were actually really strong runners too like this high winding Boss 302…I get the 302 in ’69, but in 1970 rules allowed bigger than 5 liters in the street versions. I can’t help but think Ford left something on the table by not offering the bad to the bones boss 351like they did in ’71. Right there with the fabled LT1 350 and 340 six pack mopars.
These Boss Mustangs were always a bit out of my price change back in the eighties and go figure nothings changed. Still out of reach after all these years. Awe shucks.

The ’69 Boss 302 was only available with the flat hood. The ’70 Boss 302 was offered with a shaker hood.

You seem fairly keen on these so one question I have between the ’69 and ’70 Boss 302’s would be about the heads, mainly about the difference in valve size. The ’70 version used smaller intake valves to help on the low end or am I thinking of the Boss 429? I know both of those detuned race mills were very heavy breathers.
        Thanks.

Correct the ’70 Boss 302 did use smaller valves. As you said they helped with low end grunt on the street.

I’ve always been a Ford man since I got out of the army in 67. But in 69 while working for Boeing at the 747 plant I was financially able to buy a new car I chose a Nova strictly because of the price. I traded in my 64 custom 500 four door. My payment was $95 a month for 36 months. A few years later I was able to buy a 75 Lincoln Mk 4. Now that was a nice car.
    God bless America

Cool BOSS 302 here! Factory replacement block is very common as is the rust! 69s are much rarer than 70s. Here is a 69 i found 20 years ago with 32k miles original owner. Car has been restored and now lives in Wa state.
