Old G But Good G: 1980 Mercedes 240 GD

An incredibly rugged and iconic 4×4 is a G Wagen. While most modern ones are beyond obtainable price ranges of most, there is hope for owning one and that is this red, 1980 two door Mercedes-Benz 240 GD. It is located in Fall River, Massachusetts, for sale with a buy it now price of $13,900. You can also make an offer. This left hand drive vehicle has covered 34,762 miles in its life. The listing is up on eBay.

Powering this red, off road warrior, is a rebuilt 4 cylinder diesel. That is connected to a manual transmission with the four wheel drive you would expect from this vehicle. The listing states that it runs and drives great. There is some minor rust and dents, all something you would expect with the age and use of the vehicle. The post claims the vehicle has never seen salt. The rear has barn hinged doors.

The interior is simple and utilitarian, as expected, although an aftermarket stereo has found its way into the dashboard. It might need new floors, or floor mats, it is hard to tell what is going on in the driver side foot well. The plaid seats look comfy. The whole vehicle itself looks like a picnic master. Load up your food, your date, your dog, and head out into the wilderness to enjoy the great outdoors.

This is the first year that they started importing into the US. These incredibly classy and sophisticated machines have grown on the American continent. The target audience for this generation G is not quite this generation, so to speak. This isn’t quite the YouTube statement piece of now days. A Wagen of this age and condition appeals to those who appreciates the practical functionality of why they were made.

“Body and frame in really good shape. Minor rust as shown in photos. Has not seen salt.” Seriously?!?!?! The body rust is horrendous, but inconsequential. It looks as if the rear leaf springs won’t make it to the end of the driveway!

Bring a dustpan, you’re going to need it. There is no way the body is original with that advanced rust underneath. It was probably shipped here after it would no longer pass inspection in Europe under the 5 year loophole for grey markets. Cool truck, a real shame. I guess the good news is that it makes mine look really repairable (if only I could find the parts)

A rebuilt Diesel engine after just 34,500 miles? W H Y ? That 240D should easily be good for 200,000 miles or More with proper care.

Yes the mileage seems very low and I have always thought a lot of the G Wagons, very reliable. I have owned and still own a Mercedes Unimog, you could rock the world with a MOG. so here is my problem with this G Wagon. Why was the engine overhauled, it should have gone 250k with no problem. What’s with the rust? I have owned and worked with the Benzes of a few different shapes and application, the norms for all of them are parts are expensive, you have to buy low or they will eat your lunch!!
