On Stands: 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Project

It appears that the previous owner of this Corvette Stingray stalled the restoration shortly after starting on it. They did manage to get the engine machined and to acquire a ton of new parts for it. The seller doesn’t offer us a ton of info on its condition, but they claim everything is present to put it back together. If that’s really the case, their $7,000 asking might not be too bad and they are accepting offers! If you would love to finish this Corvette, you can find it here on eBay in Mantua, New Jersey.

We don’t get a view of the engine, so we have no idea whether it’s in pieces or if it’s already put together. We do get a look at the engine bay and it looks clean. The seller claims that the front end has been reworked with new bushings, ball joints and they have a box full of additional polyurethane bushings.

The seller claims that about 80 percent of the interior has been restored, but the only new parts they mention are the seats, springs, and padding. As for that, we don’t know what else has been replaced and what is still original. Overall, it looks nice and should be a nice place to spend some time.

It would be nice to have a better idea of the status of the engine, chassis and if anything major is missing. Someone has spent a fair amount of money on replacement parts and it seems like it could be a good buy. The real challenge will be figuring out how to transport it in its current disassembled state. At the same time, it might be a good negotiating point, as it will take either putting the rear end back in or figuring out on how to load it on your own trailer. So, what do you think of this Corvette project?

    Part it out.

Nearly disassembled enough already to make that an obvious choice.

I have a ’75 with a 4-speed and a fresh hot-rodded engine, clutch, etc. Runs GREAT! And it is in one piece. It needs body prep and paint (zero accidents, just baked) and some interior work. Clean underneath, too.

It will be soon for sale, and I’d be embarrassed to ask $7K for it. And you could drive it home!

The seller here needs to get a whiff of reality. If it brings offers of even half of the BIN, I’d be very surprised.

Yawn. If the mill is refreshed to ’74 specs, than my nephew’s trike can outrun it. And not to mention an auto. Yawn.

Another project torn down and not put back together!! For some reason I can’t pull the listing up!! It’s an automatic but what motor is in it???? Still seems high priced for a torn apart car especially with an automatic transmission!!!

The seller should have spent 30 second looking at completed listing rather than what’s for sale. Most of 74 Corvettes that have sold changed hands for less than $10,000, they were decent looking drivers. Rather than asking $7,000, a more realistic price is $2,000-2,500.

Very few transporters will take a vehicle which can’t at least roll. Seller will fare much better selling it locally or parting it out on eBay. Expect to receive 20-30% of whatever he paid for those parts still in boxes, less for the items already installed. Ask me how I know…

Sorry but the bin seems awfully high for a puzzle IMO. Not the most desirable model and too many questions remain on it so the price likely will have to come down considerably before it will move.

The expression ” Basket case” comes to mind.

A good friend and fellow car enthusiast once told me that no matter how familiar you are with any car that when they are disassembled you can not look at them and tell if everything is there. He was right! Over the years I have bought my share of “basket cases” and when you start reassembling them you will always find parts missing! This car is no exception! Give me a rough complete car anytime over one that is not together.

This is a $6,000 car. Once you get into the mechanical aspects of a 40 year old plus C3. Look out. I spent 3 years and $7,000 sorting out my 73 coupe I got from CL. Body near perfect. Rust free frame and no modifications. But once you start tearing into these cars, the $$$$$ adds up. New trailing arms, bearings, u joints, shocks, brake lines, strut rods etc. Then to the front and power steering control valve; they all leak. Complete front end rebuild, replace 30 year old tires, radiator. The list goes one. But I don’t care. I did most of the work myself and now have a very dependable driver I have taken on 350 mile trips with no trouble and my car doesn’t look like every boring POS SUV.

This is a $3K car, tops! And, only if you can verify all parts are there. If you look at the way this has been taken apart, someone just started unbolting things. Not done in sub-systems, just randomly.
