One-Owner Donation: 1963.5 Ford Galaxie

Reader Don T. writes: Hi guys, there is a 1963 ½ Ford Galaxie fastback Z-code with original drive train on Rawhide’s eBay site, I work for Rawhide and noticed you put a couple of our vehicles on your site a while ago. I’m a car nut like you guys are, I couldn’t believe the Renault turbo you highlighted! Anyway, we take in so many cool old vehicle donations and this Galaxy is one of them, a 1 owner vehicle that’s been sitting in a garage for many years. The Galaxie is located in New London, Wisconsin and is up for auction here on eBay at no reserve. Thanks for sharing the find, Don!

In this case, one owner doesn’t mean pristine, but it doesn’t mean it’s beaten up, either. You can see some areas of flaky surface rust, but I don’t see any holes. I don’t see any missing trim or chrome, and while there’s some surface rust on the bumpers they don’t look too bad. The light blue color is very period and fits the car well. I think you could take at least 6 people into the drive in movie in that trunk, especially if they were friendly! And yes, there’s actually a functioning drive in close enough to me to go see a movie! The “fast back” was a mid-year addition to the Galaxie body style, with the sloped back supposedly being added for NASCAR racing purposes.

This is the view I’d like to see when I opened my garage, although I’d probably leave the hood closed! There’s one of these close to home that is dressed up to look like Andy’s patrol car from The Andy Griffith Show, and I love the rumble when it drives by.

With a C6 automatic and a console shifter, it sure seems sporty enough. We don’t get to see the front seats, but the inspection form lists the seats as being in poor condition, so I’m sure there are some other issues as well. However, the air conditioning in the left picture makes the car much more attractive to those of us in the South!

A rather unorthodox method for getting undercar pictures, but it looks like they were careful with the fork placement. I think one of the gas tank straps is broken , but the exhaust looks brand new and the rust doesn’t look too bad. I wonder what they do when the car they need to pick up is small?

Here’s what the Z-code means: a 390 V8 rated at 300 horsepower. Some parts even look relatively new under here, like the master cylinder and brake line leading from it. Unfortunately, the engine doesn’t turn over at the moment, so there will certainly need to be some work here. But your purchase looks like it’s going to a good cause, and at no reserve, you know the car will sell. Are you interested?

I like it. Too far away for me, but it hits the right buttons for me. That 63.5 roofline , I think , looks better than the T-bird inspired square roof. It’s an XL, it’s not rotted, has a 390, AC, and complete. I’ll be watching what this goes for.

Engine does turn over but needs a carb rebuild and the gas tank cleaned out..old gas. Nice old muscle…thanks guys! Don.

Nice one.. After I wrecked my 63 Galaxy convertible, I bought another 63 Galaxy sedan.. The engine was so tired, it took me a case of oil to drive my new bride out to Niagra Falls and back.. I like these cars.. They rode very well and IMHO, had style..

This one has a real nice interior and the body seems solid.. Good deal and a great car.

This car’s been around the Ebay block a few times with no sale.. Gotta wonder why.. Doesn’t look too bad for a Wisconsin car.. If you look at their other vehicle listings–you’ll probably get to wondering what method they use for pricing their vehicles.. Doesn’t make much sense why they don’t just run auctions..

This looks like an ideal candidate for a restoration.

    I dig 63 XL’s. But I’m holding for a ’66 7 Litre 4 speed.

Neat body style. This might be the only car on Earth that actually looks good in this robin’s egg blue color. Just a little bit of green in it to liven it up. Also like the Ford interiors of the ’60s. Great find.

Here’s a shot of my 63.5 XL I restored 26 years ago. Purchased it for $500.00 and it was sitting on the side of a house under a carport. The 390 had just been rebuilt according to the seller he had a falling out with the rebuilder so the motor was missing several accessories but I managed to find all of the missing items to put everything back together. The interior was white with fawn beige dash and carpet a midyear color combo. I spent about 11 K total in the restoration that today would have been triple that for the same results.
