Only 2 Doors: 1940 Buick Special

This old Buick is listed on eBay with a BIN of $4,500. It’s in King George, Virginia. It ran but the engine was smoking when it was parked 20 years ago. A good engine is included in the deal as well as replacements for some of the missing trim. It appears this Buick might be complete and mostly original except for those wheels. Were wire wheels really “the thing” in the 1990s?

The interior is complete but will need lots of cleaning and then upholstery work.

There just might be a decent car under all that dust. The paint might even be salvageable, but this Buick was on the road for many years so that’s surely a repaint and perhaps not the first one. If this old Buick is as nice as they say it is, it just might not take too much to have at least a decent driver and perhaps a really nice car.

That one went REALLY fast! From what I can see, it looks like a nice car.

I don’t think the wire wheels are original. The paint and body looks good even under all that dust.

Sold. Those were wire wheel “covers” from a 90’s GM product.

Looking at a close up of the wires and I believe they are real not hubcaps. You can see the drums behind them. The centre piece unscrews to reveal the wheel nuts.

My first car, 1940 Buick Sports Coupe. Our great aunt, gave it to my brother and I. It had under 20,000 miles, two 16 year olds pretty much ground it up. That pot metal grill was a replacement during the war when they couldn’t get chrome. Our ‘s was that way also, our aunt said she bumped a car and broke the grill during the war, no chrome available.

I think those are wheel covers. It looks like a 1980’s Olsmobile emblem in the center. If you blow up the picture you can see where the cove ends and the wheel begins directly behind the spokes. I hope someone gives this a proper OE style restoration, it would be a shame to cut this up for a street rod project.
