Only Original Once: 1968 Chevrolet Caprice

What a beautiful car. One year before this 1968 Chevrolet Caprice hardtop coupe was made, a 1967 Caprice two-door hardtop coupe was GM’s 100th million car. As far as I’m concerned, this beauty is another milestone. This example can be found here on Craigslist in Santee, California with an asking price, no, a firm price of $16,500. Thanks to Pat L. for finding this beautiful Caprice and sending in the link!

I’m a huge fan of fender skirts, in general, but they really look sharp on this Caprice, in my opinion. They give it an added elegance that the top-of-the-line Caprice deserves. This is really the main photo where you can see the only rust issue on this car. The seller talks about the “Typical GM minor rust issues remain at the base of the front fender wells since GM designers forgot to include weep holes for any moisture to dissipate front hose areas… Also, spotting on hood and trunk.”

The seller “acquired the “WHITE DOVE” from the late Montana owners 20 years ago.” They say that other than the aforementioned rust issue on the front fenders, the “rest of the car is SHOWROOM ! Interior SHOWROOM! Engine UNmolested. We have no garage space now, so it is only protected by a canopy and cover. Age dictates my lessening the pride of my herd.” I had a friend in high school who had a perfect 1965, or what I thought was a 1965, it may have been a 1966, Caprice four-door sedan in white with a blue vinyl top and perfect interior. It even had power windows which we thought were pretty cool in the late-70s. I’m surprised that this car has roll-up windows but then again, I’m not surprised.

I’m really surprised to see a gray interior. It looks like new, can it be original? I hate to even ask that for fear that the seller will yell at me. The only other interior photo is this one showing the speedometer and odometer which shows 81,941 miles. I like the seller’s attitude, they must have been overwhelmed by low-ball offers. “IF YOU ARE SERIOUS, AND PREPARED TO PAY MY FIRM PRICE, please provide your phone number so I can confirm that fact. I don’t care what other car you “missed” at a lower price” Also, “I have no need for tire kickers, or low ballers, so be polite when I call. If I don’t like you, all the money in the bank won’t buy this car from me.”

The 275-hp 327 cubic-inch V8 looks like new, what a beautiful engine compartment! There is no mention of how it runs but I’m assuming that it runs like a proverbial Swiss watch but with a bark that’ll bite. The seller’s asking price is probably right on the money even with some rust work to do. Hagerty is at $16,600 for a #3 good condition car and this one looks all of that. Plus, they say to add 10% for an AC-equipped car, so that would be $18,260. Could you fix those spots for $1,760? Probably, and this may be a nicer car than just good condition, too. Any thoughts on this white beauty?

The interior is most likely “Ash Gold.” Very popular then. It did have a tendency to fade to a silvery hue with age. Definitely a nice ride. Remember riding in Dad’s company cars as a 5yo in 68. He worked out of the Chevrolet Zone Office here in Oregon and could order a new car regularly. He’d put 3000 miles on it and get his next one. Oh the cars he drove that I’d love to have back!

I’m not a fan of the late sixties Chevies but this one looks really sharp….even with a slushbox. Don’t know about the ask….seems really high despite Hagerty’s valuation.

I’d say it’s worth the ask just because of the seller’s frank and honest attitude. My mother had a ’67 Caprice wagon with this engine and believe me, those are 275 honest-to-God American horses. As for the styling I think the ’65 Impala was a benchmark design, but the ’67-’68’s are a logical and attractive derivation.

I don’t think the buyer will be disappointed with this one.

Nice looking Caprice. The rust and buyer’s attitude should have been fixed though.

    Nice example.

    Well cared for.

Owner seems a tad Grouchy. Better get a letter of reference from your parole officer , before low balling him 😁😂🤣

Interior is metallic silver/gray. Surely original. Surely not specified by many buyers, but I Like it. Great lines on this 68 coupe. I’m sure it was not built with these Rally wheels and they don’t look right on a caprice.

Intimidating potential buyers is a novel approach.

My friend bought a new one just like this with a 4 speed. He kept it a year and traded it in on a SS 396 Chevelle 4 speed. That brought him tickets and a lot of mechanical problems.

I sure would like to know how many they sold of these with the hidden headlites & ventless windows – i only ever seen ONE!!, & as a boy, i still remember where i saw it in ’68, just like i remember where i was when JFK was shot! With that front end & the new hidden wipers & the caprice COUPE only VENTLESS frameless
windows(FULL door glass styling), compared to a ’67, i thought the future had arrived.
Unfortunately, it is gone on the outside of contemporary “cars”.

Chevrolet called this 1968 interior color Grey-Green.
