Original Hauler: 1980 Toyota Hilux

1980 Toyota Hilux Survivor

Finding any classic with original paint that actually looks nice is a tough task. Finding an old Toyota Hilux truck with nice original paint, now that’s a real challenge. While these are extremely well built little rigs, they were used and abused by most owners. There is just something about them that makes you want to work them hard. This 36 year old truck looks almost as good as it did the day it left the factory! Most of the ones I see on the roads today look worn out and tired, but that’s not the case with this one. Find this survivor here on eBay in Holden, Massachusetts.

1980 Toyota Hilux 4wd

The seller bought this rig out of California with the intention of modifying it. They had it shipped cross country to Massachusetts. After it arrived, they quickly decided it was way too nice to modify. I have to agree with them, especially given how many of these are still around and in prime condition for modification.

1980 Toyota Hilux Interior

This little 4×4 has seen just over 100k miles, but you wouldn’t know it looking at the outside and interior. The inside isn’t quite as pristine as the outside, but it’s still in great shape for it’s age and mileage!

1980 Toyota Hilux 20R Engine

Under the hood, things are clean and orderly, but there is rust starting to show on the air cleaner and radiator. It shouldn’t be to hard to address those issues though and have this 20R looking great too!

1980 Toyota Hilux On The Farm

I’ve always liked these trucks! They aren’t as practical as a full sized, but they are cheap to run and incredibly durable. With just a little detail work it would look like new! So would you take this Toyota off roading or is it too nice for that kind of fun?

My 1998. Toyota Tacoma has nearly half a million miles but doesn’t look as nice as this one. But all it’s needed has been a timing chain, an exhaust valve, a new exhaust manifold, and a number of sets of tires and brakes.

This is quite unusual to see for anybody that lives in the “rust-belt”. It seemed America finally adopted the fact that it was ok to buy a Toyota truck. I had several friends that had trucks like this, and the reason they rusted away was because they ran every day of the year, regardless of the weather. I’ve had 3 Toyota’s in my life,( of hundreds of cars) and 1 of them was a 2 wheel drive truck like this. My ex-BIL bought it brand new, ( he walked into a dealer and said I want the cheapest pickup you have, no options. At 1st, the dealer was reluctant to sell him one with no options) and put 230K miles on it before I got it. It never failed.( wait, I take that back, I did put an alternator in it) While I respectfully disagree with the author, this is pretty typical of a vehicle from Cal. and it’s not near like when it left the factory. Heaven help you if you have a vacuum leak, and there are probably issues consistent with any vehicle with 100K miles, still, just an unbelievable find. Probably the best ( smaller type) trucks ever made.

    Reserve not met at $9100.
I’m a big fan of these but it looks like my budget won’t allow me to get one. I’m not sure I’d go to my max budget for one with the standard cab either.
Man I miss my old toyo, salt water rusted her out not road salt.
