Original Owner Donation: 1965 Ford Mustang

1965 Ford Mustang Project

The tale of this ’65 Mustang is a sad one. Apparently it was donated to a local charity by the original owner. They had hoped to restore it one day, but have realized that their dream is never going to come true. They do hope it will go to someone with the resources to make it right though. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they had a place to store the car indoors as is evidenced by all the rust. The single ownership may not make much of a difference now, but you it does make you feel for this old pony. The inline-six and automatic transmission are more strikes against it too. There are a lot of people watching this one though so it might just sell. Find it here on eBay where the bidding is currently a little over $2k with a Buy It Now of $3,700. What do you think – will this one ever get restored?

Restored? Probably not. Too much rust for this plane jane Mustang. Passenger side quarter panel, door, and fender. Drivers side quarter panel, door and probably some custom fabrication for what looks like could be rust through on the C-Pillar.

Probably needs cowl work after seeing the carpet, but the underside looks OK. I didn’t see a lot of rust, but a lot of the problem areas were not shown.

It doesn’t look as bad underneath as I was expecting. And I believe all the sheet metal is available aftermarket, right?

I’ll be very surprised if it doesn’t sell at the $3,700 reserve. There should be somebody who wants to do a resto-mod, or an experienced restorer who will keep it stored inside until the notchback auto 6s appreciate enough to make this a good car to restore for resale. I just hope it doesn’t go to someone inexperienced who ends up storing it outside long-term until he restores it “someday”.

This car would be the perfect candidate for putting the body on a early 4×4 Bronco chassis that way your not destroying anything special. I like Orange but not inside and out with no black stripes to off set the bright color. Also the routing of the gas line scares the heck out of me.

I’m not an expert on Ford 6’s, but I agree with you JW. In looking at, I’m going to guess the carb is on backwards. If it faced the other way, the gas lines won’t be on the engine

Typical body rot on an older Mustang.. All repairable and parts are available.. Gonna need a lot of sweat and tears to bring it back, but worth it.. If you know what to do with it.. Value is in the eye of the beholder..
I like the find and the car..
    Great project..

    sorry!
There is one exactly like it locallywith absolutely no rust, plus a good waxing will bring it back to original kind of shine – at about the BIN money. Also, the local one ia ready to be a driver with a good tune-up.

50 years ago when I worked at a service station there was a customer with a 289 hipo in this color that constantly suffered from overheating. Just to listen to that thing idle was beautiful music that I obviously haven’t forgotten. I still want one.

My sister’s 4th Grade teacher bought one very similar to this one back when they first came out. It seems to me that it was the FIRST Mustang sold by the local Ford agency. It was the same color although I think the teacher’s had the High Perfomance 289. Not bad for a school marm…

put it on a 4×4 bronco? Really?? Jim, Please put down the meth pipe, it’s not doing you any good. Now, back to the car, drive it and fix it up as you go, put some rust treatment on the rust and enjoy it, the prices are high for a lot of the classics and his would be a good entry into owning one, $3700 is a down to earth price. Besides, after you spend all the time and money making it perfect do you really wanna park it at the grocery store? Drive it around anywhere, it’s nerve wracking. People see some nice car at the store and sometimes do some not so nice things to it.

Way to throw in a dose of reality there, Franke !!! It is good just to have an old runner like this…then if the proverbial shopping cart rolls into it, who really cares?….What’s another scratch or dent? Adds character and another story…. Peace, and Happy and safe travel Easter for all !!
