Original Paint? 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Wagon

There’s no denying that a collector car with a roof rack opens up a world of options; no longer is your luggage confined to the inside of your vehicle, and there’s a lot of freedom in that knowledge. Unfortunately, the freedom that the buyer of this ’72 Chevelle Wagon will feel is going to be dulled by its lack of an engine or transmission. Knowing, however, that the original engine was one of the most popular to ever find its way between the frame rails of an automobile will make things a bit easier. And with a starting price of $2,500 on eBay, this may be a very easy decision.

Chevelles have always been popular; in my neck of the woods, the ’68-’72 bodystyle might be in the top five of cruise night collectibles. Though the wagon might not be the most sought-after variant, muscle car fans with people or luggage to carry might see the best of both worlds in such a machine. A lot of people enjoy events such as Power Tour, and what would be better than a Chevelle Wagon? The seller claims that this one has original paint. It’s tough to tell beneath the dust, but the color on the non-original cowl hood doesn’t seem to quite match, so that might be an accurate claim. With the ubiquitous 350 badge on the fender, you know it’s set up for a small block, so finding a replacement drivetrain is as easy as a trip to the salvage yard or a call to the local parts supplier. Maybe you have one in your garage?

There’s no mention of what happened to the engine (or transmission), but this Chevelle is a rust-free car with original air conditioning. Being located in California does have its advantages when it comes to body integrity, after all. The wiring and exhaust appear to remain in the picture, so you could theoretically have this Chevelle up and running in a weekend if you’re handy in the garage.

It also has a complete interior that will clearly need a date with the detailer before you take your significant other out on a date in the new Chevelle. The gauges under the dash and the sporty steering wheel give us hope that this wagon has been on the road in the current millennium.

In fact, the seller includes this picture of the wagon with inflated tires, less dust, and maybe even an engine considering how it’s sitting. Given its current state, someone may be able to get a good deal on a wagon that needs a little love. With about four days to go on the auction and no bids as of yet, you might be the one to score a solid project car that could be ready for some road trips next summer.

Appears to be a big block exhaust pipe. Interesting vehicle in decent shape.

Most likely the 402. There is a lot you can do to this engine. It’s basically a D-nutted 396/427. I ordered a new one in ’72 and did some internal AND external additions after which it did alright. My machine shop buddy told me that to get the most out of everything we did was a longer stroke crank and mill work to the block and heads.
    Didn’t have the bread man.

Last week. The auction ended with no bids. I’m surprised, I live near there, within an hours drive there are 6 million people. Wagons have been popular here for years, it’s more than surprising no one bought it, I’m interested in its sale price. This car shows the broader car market is softening, there have been things pointing to that for months, but it’s hard to deny it at this point.

Yep. It’s a buyers market now for everything. Motorcycles are getting ridiculously cheap. I have several I’d like to sell too (vehicles only one motorcycle) mostly for space considerations. Shouldn’t have procrastinated. Oh well, I did sell one and did well. I’ll take that as a win.
