Original Paint 5-Speed: 1978 Porsche 928

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Early Porsche 928s like this 1978 model are hard to find in good, original condition, with many falling victim to years of cash-strapped owners – champagne dreams on a Bud Light budget, if you will. This example is made more desirable with its manual transmission and period-correct chocolate brown paint, otherwise known as copper brown metallic. Find this nicely preserved 928 here on eBay with a Buy-It-Now of $16,900.

The seller notes the paint is original, with just some light spots wearing through. Glass looks quite nice, and the phone dial wheels appear to be free of marring and blemishes. The 928 presents straight and true down the sides, and it would appear to have an aftermarket exhaust. U.S.-spec bumperettes are an unfortunate accessory on the exterior.

No pasha interior to be seen here, but the butterscotch leather is an ideal color for the exterior. The driver’s seat shows signs of wear, and the seller believes it was used sparingly over the last 20 years, aside from weekend drives. The backseat appears unused, but it’s not exactly a place you want to spend much time.

The engine bay looks somewhat tired, with no attempt made to detail it. 928s are not nearly as bad as armchair quarterbacks would make them out to be maintenance-wise, but they do need to be maintained. Fortunately, as an earlier car, I don’t believe this 928 is an interference engine, but a timing belt / water pump / thermostat should be done proactively unless records indicate it’s been recently addressed. The price listed here is not unreasonable, but I’d expect maintenance records to go along with that number.

I’ve always liked these, despite the opinions of the 911 drones. Because of the “it’s not a real Porsche” mantra, most of these cars were neglected and ended up scrapped. The rarity and still low prices make nice examples like this one super attractive to those of us who can appreciate orphan cars that are ignored by the herd.

Would prefer an early one with a petrol blue exterior and a pasha interior.

Nice cars and fun to drive. But buying one is risky business.

I have a 78 5 speed Silver over Pasha and I LOVE it. Not easy to work on, parts are expensive but the cars themselves are still cheap though rising fast. These cars drive extremely well, and despite the reputation as a GT, handling is very sports car. V8 sounds amazing and provides ample torque.

The 928 cost significantly more than a 911 when new and they build fewer of them than 911s… so expect the values to continue to climb.

As a fellow 928 Owner I would agree with Brian. The only real problem with the very early years is that door locks and some other items were vacuum operated and the rubber lines can get brittle and need replacing. The later versions were electric for the same items.

Non-Interference engine, not as powerful as later ones but I have had one of these up to 110 thru most of Nevada during the worst of summer heat and not a problem. The manual transmission is really rare only about 5% of total production were manuals. On the early cars the 5 speeds are becoming more desirable the later ones it is mixed and more depending upon owner preference.

    Pretty car.

Brian my 928 was the duplicate of yours except mine had a wing on the rear, and yes I had the checkerboard pattern on the middle of my seats. You know that was my next step up after my RX-7. I really liked my 928 and owned it for about 7 yes and put 20k miles on it and had only one problem and that was the air pump locked up. Simple fix remove it buy new size belt and good to go. If I remember right it didn’t go a little over 150 mph, I really liked this vehicle.
