Package Deal: Pair of 1960s Pontiac GTOs

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Pontiac GTO was the posterchild of 1960s American muscle cars. Launched in 1964 as a mid-size performance machine, a flood of competitors soon followed. Sales would peak in 1966 and then begin to decline as the market became saturated and conditions changed. The seller has a pair of second-generation GTOs from 1969 and 1968, offered here on craigslist for $25,000. Located in Billerica, Massachusetts, this once dynamic duo is another bodacious tip brought to us by Barn Finder “Barney”.

GTO sales were still strong in 1968 and 1969 (87,000 and 81,000, respectively). But the tides turned in 1970 as only 40,000 GTOs were delivered. The insurance companies had figured out that customers with cars like these should pay higher premiums. And engines would begin a detuning process in 1971 with the goal of lower emissions. The top (and only engine) in the GTOs for both of these years was a 400 CI V8 with differing horsepower ratings depending on Ram Air induction.

1969 GTO (Warwick Blue)

We’ll start with this one because that’s the one the seller talks about the most. Its numbers matching and may have been in storage since the late 1990s. It’s pretty complete, but rusty with corrosion having taken over the trunk pans, rear quarters, and front fenders. There is also rust up under the vinyl top, but the blue interior cleaned up well. We’re told the motor runs since the seller rebuilt the carburetor. 86,000 miles on the odometer (but could be 186,000).

1968 GTO (April Gold)

This car originated in Pennsylvania, and the seller is the 3rd owner. Also numbers matching, we’re told this Poncho runs and drives with a matching interior and Hurst shifter (His & Hers edition). The Rally wheels are in great shape with new tires all around. It appears to need less body shop attention than its companion. A video is included. For whatever reason, the seller wants to part with these cars together. He’d probably have better luck selling them separately.

Nice find Barney, and write-up Russ.
Two numbers matching GTO’s from 68 and 69 complete for 25K with clean titles. What could go wrong? These deserve an in person look up close. Depending on the rust I would be inclined to restore one/ sell one, or restore both.
If these cars were mine originally or even the first 5-10 years of their existence, there is no way the original drive train would make it to the mileage century mark at least without a rebuild.

I had one just like the gold one here. It was a fast GTO. It had AC and power windows. Really nice ride.

good score here but hard to say if you split them up if there is money to be made considering the condition of both.12.500 each at this point is a good deal

This guy already tried to sell the blue one by itself and it didn’t sell. These need more work than you think.
