Pasteurized Patina: 1934 Dodge Humpback Panel

Rough and rusted looks are something that is in style right now. People spend time and money trying to make vehicles look older than what they are. With this 1934 Dodge KCL Panel Delivery, you don’t have to worry about that. It looks that way because it is that way. At writing, the auction price is at $16,000 with the reserve not met. It is located in Reading, Pennsylvania. You can view the listing on eBay.

The engine is not original, it was replaced in the early 90’s with a Chevy V8. That is connected to a 350 turbo transmission with a Ford Maverick rear end. All of the original rope wire has been replaced and the master cylinder is stock but rebuilt. There are new steel brake lines and brakes as well as metal fuel lines all the way to the fuel tank. Most of the engine components have been tuned up in the near past.

On the inside, the front seats appear to be from an early 80’s van. They are the only real part to the interior, other than the floor shifter. The seats do have seat belts and can recline and adjust for comfort. There is a dome light but other than that, the interior is box truck bare, except for a few rugs. A 1940’s fan sits on the dash to provide some sort of cooling. The steering wheel and column are original.

This truck used to haul a 30’s race car. It is a workhorse and based on the mechanics and story listed, it is a reliable working vehicle. It would be a wonderful truck to do exactly what it did, tow vintage race cars to race tracks. If you are looking for a hauler, this is the truck. With ample room in the back to carry supplies, and eye-catching looks, it will probably get just as much attention as whatever car it is towing.

Fantastic truck, now that the gm engine and trans are there I’d leave them. I would have put a 318 in there and torque flute trans. At this point though a 700r gm transmission would be a good up grade. Based on the already painted interior colour I’d restore and paint the outside chocolate brown with black fenders and running boards. If possible I’d upgrade to disc brakes up front too but you don’t want to loose those wheels in the process. A duel stage master cylinder would be a good add on too. JMO.

Wow…just wow! Could see Sis driving this to work everyday or paint the truck
and rent it out to advertisers as a rolling
billboard. And if Sis didn’t want to drive
it, my neice certainly would. Just think
of the cash you could make doing that!
Run it through the cruise line at Old Town,
and watch the profits grow. Except for
a new coat of paint, and a decent intetior,
    I wouldn’t change a thing!

I’ve always liked the Humpback vans. For me, the original six would’ve been just fine. Maybe go up to a larger flathead six, like a 251 or even a 265. I do have to say that if one HAD to run a V8 I would’ve found a 318-360 and run that one instead of the SBC. But, with the exception of the red-headed stepchild, I like to keep it in the family. Nice unit otherwise. I AM a little disappointed the race car doesn’t come with the package…

Awww reminds me of the Panel Truck in Hogan’s Heros (see attached) , the one that the dog handler used to bring in those viscous German Shepards (and sneak out escaping prisoners). Love old panel trucks. Sure don’t like sbc engines in Mopars. Funny about tradition: You can put a Chevy in anything but a MOPAR. You can put a MOPAR Hemi in anything it’ll fit in , but not the rest of the MOPAR engine line. You can’t put a Ford in a Chevy or MOPAR. Ha Ha. :-) Terry J

Its perfect as is, but that is with the race car, it makes it all work. The trailer and the race car & trailer, could be worth more than the panel!

With all that work already done (yes, I would’ve put in a 318) go ahead and paint the exterior!

There is no reason to stick a modern engine in an old car. Unless you are going to drag race it, leave it original!

Yeah, the only reason to put a modern engine in an old car is if you want to drive it.
