Early F-Series pickups remain popular with builders, and this 1954 Ford F-100 looks like a straightforward starting point for someone wanting to build one their own way. Purchased as a barn find in Texas, this truck is now located in Frazier Park, California, and is offered as a Barn Finds Exclusive with an asking price of $1,500.

This F-100 is being sold as a rolling project. It does not currently have an engine or transmission, but the seller states that the chassis still rolls and retains its steering and suspension components. That makes it easier to transport and gives the next owner a foundation for a restoration, a mildly upgraded driver, a shop truck, or a restomod project.

The body appears to retain the classic mid-1950s Ford pickup shape, with the cab, doors, hood, front sheet metal, and bed still present. The seller describes the body as “pretty solid for the year” and notes that the truck has all of its windows and window mechanisms. Photos show surface rust, weathering, and areas that will require repair, but the truck appears complete enough to serve as a viable project rather than just a loose cab and frame.

Inside, the F-100 is rough and incomplete, as expected for a long-stored project. The floors, door openings, dash, cab structure, and interior panels should all be inspected carefully before purchase. The photos show the truck in honest project condition, with enough patina and age to give it character while still leaving plenty of room for the next owner’s vision.

One important note is that the truck is missing its title, so you will want to research registration requirements in your state before purchasing. The VIN is listed as F10D4M10908, so a call to your DMV should reveal what all it will take to get it titled.

At $1,500, this 1954 Ford F-100 offers an affordable entry point into one of the most desirable generations of classic Ford pickups. It will need just about everything mechanically, but for someone looking for a solid starter project with vintage truck style, this could be worth a closer look.

Seen a lot worse for a lot more, only glitch would be the title depending on where you live.

Tetanus anyone? This is truly starting at the beginning. Years ago, as younger men, we’d jump for joy finding something like this. To make it even halfway presentable, would be an undertaking, no pun intended, well maybe. Lot of work to do that. IF,,,one was to do that, it’s certainly a good starting point. Front cab mounts are a biggie, and luckily, these look okay. Like the Willys, there are so many of these resto-mods, having an original is probably more wanted, just make sure whatever powers it, has an automatic behind it. Nice find.

With the exception of the hood, this truck looks quite restorable, or resto-mod since the engine has disappeared. The problem buying a vehicle with no engine is all the hookups that will be missing. Get used to the fact that unless you can find a parts donor, you will be doing a lot of fabricating.

Looks like this would’ve originally been powered by a six, so now would be the time to drop in a suitable V8. If it came my way it might be an opportunity to use up the 400M that I’ve had sequestered away for years now. And yes, I know, it damages my reputation as a bone-stock builder, but the other side of the coin is getting it back on the road where it belongs.

    But it isn’t an SBC.

That hood is going to be a challenge. Might want to find a replacement…

Actually a 3.9 would drop in quite well. I’ve seen them with the turbo mounted down on the side so hood clearance would be ok.

Looks like a great project for dropping in a 300 6 with a 4spd behind it as a starting point. Buy in is very reasonable, maybe negotiable?

This is an interesting find, and as you all know I lean toward originality. A reasonably priced starter kit, But as Howard has said a lot of work. It was originally a 6 by the star on the grille where Geo’s picture shows the V-8 emblem. A unique repower would be a 4-53 Detroit diesel, but they are scarce also. This one was driven to the 2015 Truckie’s Reunion in Alice Springs AU and has an Aussie built body.

Hey Brocky, 4-53s are out there but they weigh #1000, twice an SBC, a BT3.9 weighs in at 700#.

There is nothing like a fat fender Ford! No resto-mods please, would be a great driver restore project when completed. you would have many options to drop in and some fabrication opportunities as Geo mentioned.

I’ve got a flathead V8 sitting in the garage that would make this cooler than any sbc. I’m in the midwest though,so it’s well beyond the net I can cast.

In 1954 Ford had the 239 ci overhead valve Y-Block..

I had one like this about 40 years ago. It was flat black and my wife called it “Darth Vader” due to the front look of course. It had the original 223 6 engine, sold for around $500. Times change.

I have had 6 of these F-100’s, and I like them a lot, one good thing about them is the availability of parts new, used, and reproduction parts. I think this truck at $1500 or less would be about a break even for the parts you could use in a re-build. Looks like it has a glove box if it hasn’t been removed that is where the VIN is just pop rivited on the door. Of course you need a title with that number. But it probably will not matter because you will just be using parts and it may not even worth that. If you really want one of these trucks it is not hard to get one.

I still have too many parts from my 40 years of owning these.
