Period Correct Camper: 1970 Ford Bronco

This 1970 Ford Bronco is desirable just for being an unrestored example, but the period-correct camper shell and paint scheme put it over the top. The seller is asking a fairly tall price for this survivor Bronco, but I suspect he’s just fishing for the highest and best. I’ll withhold my opinion on that approach, especially since this truck seems to be in the kind of condition that would let it stand on its own without the need to hope for a good offer. The seller maintains it has a numbers-matching 302 under the hood, and it would appear from the photos that the rear fenders have never been cut. Find the Bronco and its matching camper shell here on eBay with an asking price of $73,999.

Now, there’s no best offer option on this listing, but the seller includes in the description the instructions to not send offers through the eBay messaging service, which leads me to believe he is open to receiving offers – just over the phone, and not through email. The top is pretty clever, with a pop-top style arrangement that elevates to reveal the sleeping compartment up top while helping to cut down on drag when said quarters are not needed. I’ll be honest and say that I’ve never seen a camper shell setup like this with the pop-top arrangement, but I’m sure some of our seasoned camper readers will recognize it as being an artifact from the 1970s camping scene. It appears to be in nicely preserved condition with a handy rear access door.

The seller doesn’t go into much detail despite how cool this Bronco is, and it seems like the kind of truck that would come with loads of stories. From what I can tell, this is the section of the camper that materializes once the pop-top is opened up. The fabric lining the upper cabin seems to be in good shape, and even the cushion seems to be holding up fairly well. The upholstery pattern reeks of 1980s decor, and the fake wood trim completes the look. There’s no telling what the atmosphere is like inside the tent area, but that’s just one of the surprises you’ll have to live with if you buy this cool Bronco camper sight-unseen.

Fortunately, all signs point to it being a well-loved truck, and the seller claims it is mostly solid but not restored. While it runs and drives well, the listing still recommends upgrading to power steering and brakes, which would certainly enhance the driving experience when it came to a stop. The seller notes it has dual batteries which were replaced not too long ago, and that he drives it around fairly often, so it seems likely there are no major outstanding mechanical faults to address. The 3o2 is paired to a three-speed on the column, and aside from the lofty asking price, there’s a lot to love about this camper-ready Bronco. Have you ever seen a camper shell like this with a pop-top roof?

It’s very cool, but the price is absolutely insane. This is what’s happening in the current market for interesting cars (as well as boats and houses). It’s such a white-hot sellers market, some people put a flat-out crazy price on something and think someone will pay it.

What’s even crazier is that more often than not, someone does.

How long can this bubble go on?

The camper is a unit from Four Wheel Campers – nice piece and not at all common these days (or ever, really). A good friend in NC keeps track of them and I think he knows of about 20 of them in existence at this point.

This seller is really shooting for the stars with this pricing now. A friend of mine in CA owned it at one time and I think he sold it for maybe $7K? Don’t recall exactly. Then it went to a flipper in the NE who sold it for about $20K. The FL owner has been trying to sell it for a few years now in the high 20s with no takers. Assuming it’s the same seller, he’s now shooting for the stars.

Four Wheel Campers is still in business. There are also several companies building similar models. I bought a 30 year old fully functional Four Wheel for $800.00. Considering that these start in the mid teen kilobucks for a basic box with nothing inside to mid 20k for a fully optioned model, I’d say I got a good deal.

Short wheelbase, high center of gravity…looks really unsafe to me.

Actually the center of gravity for these early Bronco and later Bronco specific campers from Four Wheel Campers (4WC) and Hallmark Campers was very low. You would be surprised at the places these campers can go when mounted on a capable Bronco or Blazer.

These units were also much lighter than the fiberglass Blazer “Chalet’s” offered by Chevrolet in 1976/1977 which were very overloaded. Weight on these campers was around 600lbs for the early Bronco 4WC campers.

I have a Hallmark brand Bronco specific camper mounted when new on a 1982 Ford XLT Lariet Bronco.

I am in the process of removing the camper from the 1982 XLT Lariet 2 Door Bronco upon which the camper was originally mounted and mounting the camper on a 1990 Centurion C350 4 Door 4WD Bronco.

Should be neat and useful Overland rig when completed.

Regarding the comment of “have you ever seen a pop top camper SUV before?”

Hello……….Chevy Blazer Chalet or GMC Jimmy Chalet. I do admit I had not seen a Bronco version before.

    I love it.

    “…ever seen a camper shell like this…”
these have been uploaded since early 90s on our bronk/other sites. No, never seen ’em in person. This is cuz so rare. Inflated $ for the bronk = these to B even more inflated.
The “Chalet” (all glass) was pretty heavy (as in rare AND weight). The one linked above would B the one to get for mod-severe 4W. Some use the nomenclature ‘overland’ to mean “yeah, it can 4W but not like the pop top blazer” (serious v ‘just some gradients’). For every automotive Q there is the APPLICATION answr. Lookin @ these let U know how narrow the slots get. The EB pop top might do better ‘back east’, the others on the wide-er open spaces ‘out west’?

Not sure where the $73K price came from, listing now shows it at 1 penny under $50K. Would have been good to see the stove/refer/sink area.

Good day, the first picture was taken at the International Speedway in Daytona. I saw this Bronco there and talked with the onwer. Theres alot of comments about the price….I will repeat myself again….Find One. I want to see anyone produce another vehicle like this in this condition and less money….Cant do it. I was all over this truck and I cant tell ya “Like New” are my comments. Ive seen Broncos go for over 125k, check ebay now. Look around. New trucks are 80k, Yes theyre a wounderful maze of electronics. At least here that electronics tech wont cost you $125.00, because I dont blink an eye when I charge that money. And it has an original camper….to boot.
