Pony in the Barn: 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback

1968 Ford Mustang Fastback

This 1968 Mustang Fastback is barn fresh, but it’s seen better days. It’s a J code car and it runs, but doesn’t drive since the brakes are shot. J code Fastbacks are getting harder to find, especially affordable ones. If you’re looking for a great project car, this might be the one for you. It can be found here on eBay with a current bid of $2,700.

1968 Ford Mustang Fastback Dash

The interior in this Fastback is mostly intact, but is in need of attention. The front floors are rusty and are going to need to be replaced. The seats are intact, but are going to need to be reupholstered and the dash pad is cracked and will need to be replaced. This interior is going to need some work to get it looking great again.

1968 Ford Mustang Fastback Engine

The J code means that this car came with the 302 V8 with the 4 barrel carb. This was the first year for the 302 V8 and while there were bigger and more powerful V8s offered in the Mustang, this engine offered the best combination of weight savings and power. With the 4 barrel carb, this engine was rated at 250 hp but with some mild modifications this thing can easily produce 300 hp. The seller claims the engine runs, but it looks like it could use a refreshing.

1968 Ford Mustang Fastback Rear Corner

This Fastback is obviously in need of lot of attention, but it would definitely be worth the work to restore it. Parts are widely available for these cars and a usually affordable. We would rebuild the 302, repair the serious rust, get the interior usable, and drive this thing just as it is. The rough look of the car just makes it look that much more aggressive. We would be sure to check the structure of this car for any serious rust in the structure. If there is, then this car might not be good for anything other than parts, but we are hopeful.

The J-code 302 was rated at 230 (gross) horsepower, five more than the A-code 4-barrel/premium fuel 289 it replaced. I think the 351 2-barrel (H) that came in for ’69 was rated at 250.I still want it, though!
