Pristine 4×4: 1981 Datsun 720 Pickup

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It’s a shame there’s not more information about this incredibly nice looking 1981 Datsun 720 King Cab pickup, as it’s likely one of the best ones left and sporting some fairly choice modifications. First of all, it’s insanely rare to find one of these that hasn’t been completely trashed or rotting from the inside out. But to find one that’s well preserved and updated with the sort of modifications that preserve its originality while increasing its usefulness – well, that’s approaching one of a kind territory. Find the Datsun listed here on Facebook Marketplace with the seller’s promise to add more information soon.

That one photo is all we have to go on, but if you’ve been hunting for one of these Datsun pickups that isn’t completely rotted out, it seemed worthy of sharing with our readers. Personally, I’ve always liked the 720, but very rarely do they turn up in anything other than beater-grade condition. Every now and again, a survivor pops up, but I like this one for having what looks like a subtle lift kit, roof racks, cargo basket, painted steel wheels, and of course, the oh-so-important graphics kit still intact. It’s a sharp truck and looks like it’s been living with an owner that knew just what needed improving on an already durable truck. Are you curious enough to contact the owner for more info?

To me the Datsun trucks don’t have the same appeal as a vintage Toyota truck. From a reliability standpoint I think they held their own. Toyota has better looks though. Our family almost came home with a King Cab when I was in high school. I remember going to look at a new one with my dad. He wanted a truck but needed it to be able to carry the kids as well. He brought me to sit in the back to see if there would be enough room. I still remember the new car smell. Never knew why he didn’t buy it. Maybe they couldn’t come together on the deal?

The way this non-ad is put together I’d bet it belongs to a dealer and may be in route to their dealership. This was put out to gauge interest before they get it in their hands and can prep it, then set a firm price.

    Who issued that license plate?

An old guy used to come into the store where I worked,in
Arcata,CA.He had a mint one of these,in light metallic blue.I think
he bought it new.I asked him if he wanted to sell it,but he said “No”.
Later,I saw that he’d passed away.Wonder where it is now?
In the early ’80’s,I test drove a 2WD King Cab.I took it home,
but decided against it when I test-fitted our son’s car seat in it.
I figured that we’d need to cut off his legs to make him fit.

This past week I was snowmobiling in Michigan’s upper peninsula and to my shock there was a mint condition early 80s Datsun/Nissan king cab 4X4 being drive on the salty roads in South Range Michigan. Just shocked that a guy would be ruining that nice a truck in the winter, considering that you just don’t find them nice like that anymore

I agree Toyota is better looking. I am the original owner of a 84 sr5 4×4. I started restoring it. New brake drums, pads, rebuilt slave cylinders in the rear. New disks, pads, calipers in the front. Had the transmission gone through and rebuilt motor. Got busy and haven’t done anything to it in awhile, I just start it up every couple of weeks to keep the battery charged. Maybe some day I’ll get it done.
