Raggedy Top: 1968 Pontiac GTO convertible

This sad Goat listed on eBay in Omaha, Nebraska will take extensive and expensive restoration to bring it back to life. It has been in hibernation since 1977 but is mostly complete (except for the bits that have rusted away) and original.  It was recently listed and bidding reached over $10,000, but it did not reach reserve and has since been relisted.

The interior is better than you might expect. The dash wasn’t bad until someone cut it up to install those gauges. What a shame.

That certainly is a raggedy top, but it works. These convertible GTOs are rare, so perhaps there is some hope for it.

Here’s the 350 HP 400 CID engine. It last ran in 1995. It’s not frozen and appears complete and unmolested. It’s the original engine.

One expects convertibles to have more rust and this GTO is certainly no exception. The passenger door won’t open, hopefully not because it’s sagging in the middle, but that’s a possibility to consider. With all the visible rust, it’s scary to think what one will find when it is taken apart. With enough money this GTO could become a nice car, but could it possibly be worth even the cost of restoration? $10,000 wasn’t enough to meet reserve in the previous auction. It will be interesting to see you think.

Looks to be a pretty solid example and if the reserve is 9k or less I would call this a bargain for a numbers matching real GTO, that is also a convertible, in green and with the hidden headlight option. have to see in person but looks like a fair deal.

Couldn’t get the ” Listed on ebay ” link to take me there so I couldn’t see more pics but if the motorg is original and not in bad condition and the body rot is not swiss cheese then it would be worth 10K a 4 speed would have made it worth more. Convertible GTOs are a rare find. The interior is unexpectedly nice for the ragged top, why cut a dash up when you could mount gauges below the dash. That was a sin to any GTO lover.

I was 19 yrs old and found the hardtop twin to this. Was in way better shape. The guy wanted $1500 and was drivable. Unfortunately, my father talked me into buying a new Ford Ranger. He told me I needed reliable transportation, not a “hobby” car. Yeah…I rub it in his face every now and then. Where did I put the Jack Daniels? I need a drink

My dad had a 64 GTO and let my brother sell it around 1981 with 64k original miles. Dad wanted what he paid for it in 64, $2,000. My bro sold it for $4,000. WoW !!!! Geesh!

I’ve never seen a GTO with bucket seats and column mounted automatic shifter. If it’s real, that alone makes this rare. If #’s match, and and there is PHS documention, this may be worth the $10k but I’d be very carefull.

the seller states his friend put in buckets, with the reclining passenger seat, and headrests.. could it have been a bench seat car? while I am an enthusiast, I am not an expert .looks to be in decent shape. would it have come with a bench, because buckets were an option?

I test drove a bucket seat column shift 69 GTO back in the late 70’s. That was the reason I didn’t buy it.

Looks like it may have been an air conditioned car; it probably quit working at some point and someone cut the hole a little larger and put the gauges in; notice the right air vent seems to be missing also; nevertheless, it will need a new dash pad. This was my favorite Pontiac color.

Too bad some genius chopped up the dash for those crappy gauges

Seeing this car makes me a bit sad. In the early 90’s I purchased a triple black 68 GTO power top convertible. Very nice driver with cold factory A/C power windows, and trunk, power front disc brakes, power steering, tilt wheel, factory AM/FM, working Hide A Ways, Rally II’s, and factory His and Hers console shifter. Original 400, turbo 400 car. I bought it because it was a GTO convertible. I had a 69 GTO coupe at the time as well. Drove it for about a year on a regular basis, but got tired of trying to keep a black car clean here in the dusty southwest. Never washed a car so much in my life. Sold it for what I thought was good money. Now I see this one and wish I had hung on to mine.
Wonder what it would be worth today, being as nice as it was back then?

The ralley wheels are not included. Guy wants an extra $500 for them. Bid accordingly.

Drives me nuts when they list a vehicle then say the whatever is extra. Just list it for what you want for it as shown. Better to say will take xxx less without the xxxx. Reminds me of a snake oil salesman when they try to get the extra out of you.
