The seller indicates this 1972 Grumman Motorhome is a bit of a project, and you could just use it as a place to live versus putting it back on the road. For $995, that’s just one month’s worth of rent payments in most places (and a cheap payment at that), so perhaps this is a better option than living in some expensive, crowded metropolis. Of course, you’ll also have to find a way to make some money on the road, as running or not, this motorhome will have needs. Find it here on craigslist near Agnew, Washington.
We’ve discussed plenty of times how old motorhomes really are labors of love. Unless you have the means to be like one of those YouTube superstars that can do all of your own labor over nights and weekends to transform a camper like this into a rolling penthouse suite, it’s going to be a tough project not to lose motivation on. And God forbid you farm it out to someone, the invoice will be massive and it will still steer like a 1970s grain truck with a complicated plumbing system. All that said, the feeling of it being a tugboat on wheels is also half the fun.
Surprisingly, the interior looks to be in good shape – and that’s where this one begins to make a little bit more sense if you’ve had an eye out for a vintage motorhome project. I don’t think you’d need to gut this interior at all – in fact, I think it’d be a bad idea to rip all this out – but just focus on spit-shining what’s already there and installing some new floors and bathroom equipment to freshen it up. The fake wood paneling appears to be in surprisingly nice shape and although the seller says it needs a good cleaning, this is hardly a train wreck inside.
The driver’s compartment is wide and airy, and fortunately those huge windshield panes don’t have any cracks. The Grumman is powered by a Dodge 414 engine that the seller claims was running when parked, and hopefully, any replacement parts you need are still in good supply. The furnace is gone but it does come with a gas stove, and the listing indicates the air conditioning equipment is still intact. It does have new brakes and the aluminum side panels likely means rust isn’t a problem – along with living in a very friendly climate for older vehicles. Is this a bargain at less than $1K?
Coming Soon! To an underpass near you.
It will be out in Forks (not super far) by the end of the week, with some druggies living/cooking in it. Which is a shame, this would be kinda cool to fix up and make road worthy again.
What is that white box sitting between the stove and the sink that appears to have something growing in it?
Looks like a bread machine.
I see a “ Set-it-and-forget it” on the counter…..Ron Popiel would be proud!
Walmart wouldn’t mind you parking that in the corner of their lot………as long as you did all your shopping there. That would be half a month’s rent here. (Toronto).
414?
Given that it’s a ’72, I’m guessing that’s a 440.
Or is this an engine that I am completely unaware of?
More like a Grubman , some one must have been living in this thing , Ill pass !!
Soap, disinfectant and elbow grease are your friends dude. Problem solved.
Didn’t Cousin Eddie drive this to the Griswold’s for Christmas Vacation?
What part of California? Was born and raised out there near Palm Springs.
I think it’s a 413 engine not a 414
Gotta give them creativity points for putting a gas stove in to replace the furnace. But what I am really a fan of is the cactus motif folding card table for the dinette. Crafty…
Throw in shipping and I’m a buyer. I will truly then.. “live in a van, down by the (New) River !!”
If it was in Florida I’d go for it. Looks better than the Fleetwood Southwind that I have.
Damn, why are all the cheap RVs out in the western half of the country? I have a family member who has lost their place to live [property was sold] and I’ve been searching for an older RV for her to live in, here in Maryland!
