This 1987 Buick Grand National is so clean and beautiful it’s hard to believe it has 109,000 miles! The seller claims it is one of about 55 equipped with a tan leather interior, and of course, that is mint as well. The car is listed for sale here on eBay and with no reserve showing, the current bid of just over $26,500 may be all it takes to bring this Buick home! Until the end of the auction, home is Rowlett, Texas for the black beauty.
The gloss of the just-finished repaint is evident from these pictures; I just wish they had included more pictures of the entire car. Still, it’s obviously a quality repaint. The Grand National resulted from Buick wanting to capitalize on its NASCAR record with the Regal; the 1987 models were the last ones made and 20,747 were produced.
It’s nice to see how straight the body shut lines are as well. I’m guessing these may have been improved during the painting process through adjustment; I don’t remember many mid-80s GM products looking this nice. Grand Nationals were the showcase of the Buick lineup–does anyone know if they received special finishing treatment over standard Regals?
Here’s the mint condition tan leather interior that makes this one a little rarer than a “normal” Grand National. The seller has slightly improved the car overall (more on that later) but thankfully has left the interior alone.
The seller details that the car is now equipped with an upgraded transmission and torque converter, R134 converted air conditioning, an upgraded sound system, and some other performance enhancements. Would you return this upgraded Buick to stock, or leave the aftermarket parts in place? And would you drive it or only show it? Also, for those of you that have driven these beasts, what’s it like?
Cool car but technically it’s not a GN, it’s a T-type. The GN’s were a very specific package, blacked out with a spoiler on the rear, different rims, interior, etc.
This car was listed here earlier this month by Jeff, and that eBay auction ended on 25 December 2021 at $25,800/18 bids. Maybe they’ll have better luck this time around. GLWTA!! :-)
Certainly not a GN. JCA is correct. Do your homework before falling in love.
Not a GN. Regular Car Reviews has a review of one that goes over how to tell if it’s a real GN.
Definitely not a GN, but a T-Type Regal. Essentially same performance/mechanicals, but different appearance. That said, still a really nice car. Many of these came in gray, which I prefer personally.
On further inspection, this is not a T-Type. I don’t think the T-Type was available in 1987 as a model. Buick for 1987 offered packages on the standard Regal. The “T”package was suspension and appearance only, so you can get a naturally aspirated Regal that looked like a turbo, but wasn’t turbocharged. The turbocharged engine was also available as an option in 1987, so you can order a “Turbo T”, which was a turbocharged Regal with the “T” appearance and suspension package. This was not a T-Type, but a Regal ordered with special options that made it very similar to an 1983-86 T-Type. I believe the GN was always a standalone model. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong about any of this.
No sir. The T-Type was the same as a GN other than it came in various colors and interiors. Same motor and suspension. The T-Type was technically the faster car because of the lighter wheels.
I had one of each.
A seller is misrepresenting a vehicle he’s trying to sell. How often does this happen? Y’all keep remaining skeptical.
T-Types we’re available in 1987.
It’s not a Grand National, but it is a Regal Limited with the Turbo option, rarer than a National and only avail. this way in 1987. I was a buick service manager then, had a old man customer who ordered a new Regal limited with the Turbo option, two tone brown, moonroof, loaded with leather pillow seats. He loved what he called the passing gear in that car. I myself had special ordered two 86 and two 87 Grand Nationals. They’re all ancient history now, those were the days.
I like it more than a GN. Little throw back to when interiors mattered vs the always grey and blah GN interiors.
Column shift is golden ultra rare for a turbo buick. Love it. Passing gear is right i drove my buddy’s t-type they move out , when you pull left and goose it.
How could the writer of the article get it so wrong!? It’s obviously easy to see this is not a GN
I have found the “writers” make many mistakes, most likely from not doing any research on the vehicle they are writing about.
Yep, I knew this wasn’t a GN within the first 5 seconds of seeing the first picture – chrome bumper gives it away.
I came very close to ordering a T-Type Turbo in ’86 but then took a GLHT out for a test drive and realized I could save thousands of dollars for just as many thrills.
There’s nothing that says “cool” better than massive fender cornering lights!
Whatever it is, it sold at 26,600
Sorry writer, but you should probably seek another career…this should be an easy one and you managed to get this so wrong that it is pitiful. I felt bad for you as I read this.
