Real Deal Kremer: 1978 Porsche 930

These days, there’s lots of chatter in the exotic car and truck world about “bespoke” services, which is a fancy way of saying that you can order anything you want from the factory if you have endless piles of cash. It’s essentially letting you build the car that they won’t put on the production line because the colors or fabrics or wheel choices are too extreme for most consumers’ tastes, but if you want to write a big enough check, the manufacturer will see what they can do. While I have no specific issue with this, I do wish we could go back to the glory days of risky racing behavior when the same people were writing those same big checks to build epic race cars like this genuine Kremer-built 1978 Porsche 930, listed here on eBay for $239,000.

Isn’t this just infinitely cooler than showing up at a meet and flashing your orange rind-encrusted alligator leather seating surfaces? I don’t know; call me traditional, but I found it far more exciting when some billionaire called up a couple of guys in a workshop in Cologne and asked them them to take an already inherently risky vehicle (the Porsche 930, à la the widowmaker) and requested that the engine power be doubled and the bodywork modified to help it go even faster than it could in stock form. Then, they took it to the track, where their skill level was immediately revealed, and was usually far below what was required to drive the car correctly. Hell, this car dyno’d at 600 horsepower!

All kidding aside, I certainly hope you’ve got some track days under your belt before buying something like this. There’s nothing about this 930 that says you should just plan to drive it on the street (the seller does note it’s street legal). It’s clear from the level of equipment on board that this 930 was built for road course battles, and knowing how devoted Kremer was to taking the already impressive Porsche 930 and making it an absolute track weapon, it has to be an absolute blast to drive. While Kremer focused on the engine build, it often partnered with DP (Designs in Plastic) Motorsports to enhance the aerodynamics of the bodywork and equip it with whatever wings and spoilers were necessary for maximum downforce.

Some of the equipment that helps this wild 930 get to 600 horsepower includes 100 mm Mahle pistons, Web GT2 Evo camshafts, twin plug heads, S-Car-Go intercooler, Pauter rods, and a Knife Edge crankshaft. It also sports 935 centerlock hubs with BBS wheels, Brembo brakes, and a roll cage. The beauty of this car is it has the historic Kremer connection along with the modern-day equipment to make it usable as intended, so you ultimately check two boxes that are very important to the Porsche faithful: a connection to its illustrious motorsports heritage, and a track build that allows you to drive it anger without guilt. There are plenty of tribute 930 slant noses out there and if that’s what you like you can have one for street or track. This car has provenance with one of the great Porsche builders and race shops of all time. I think it’s worth every penny.
