Repainted 30 Years Ago: 1977 Pontiac Trans Am

Trans Ams draw attention and this Code 75 red 1977 Pontiac Trans Am is no exception. Mitchell G. found it for sale here on eBay. The seller states that it is a two owner car that has 54K original miles. The second owner had it for 30 years prior to passing away and had a high end paint job done when it was acquired in the 1990’s. The seller is asking $31,900 or Best Offer and the Trans Am is a 4 speed so it shouldn’t last long. The car is located in Port Orchard, Washington.

The black interior looks nice and the car was originally equipped with tilt steering. The car has its original radio and the factory 8 track player. In addition, the dash has the factory switches for power door locks and rear defrost. The wheels on this 1977 Trans Am should be aluminum or silver in color but were powder coated in red at some point to match the exterior paint. The tires are way past their prime and dated coded 30 years ago.  The seller states that a new hood bird from Phoenix Graphics comes with the sale.

Pontiac offered the 455 cubic inch V8 engine in the Trans Am from 1971 to 1976. Since it was no longer offeredin the Trans Am in 1977, Pontiac introduced the high performance W72 400 cid engine option to replace it. As far as engine options, the L78 400 cubic inch V8 engine was the standard engine and was rated at 180 horsepower. The W72 400 cubic inch V8 was the performance option and was rated at 200 horsepower. The W72 engine came from the factory with chrome valve covers and 6X heads. In California, emissions limited the engine in a Trans Am and the Pontiac 400 was not allowed in the Golden State. So all Trans Ams in California were equipped with the Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 185 horsepower.

Besides the condition, one of the bonuses on this car is the factory 4 speed transmission which makes this car a lot of fun to drive. I have a 1978 Trans Am with the W72 engine and 4 speed and it is one of my favorite cars to drive. This one will probably find a new home quickly even if many will not find the painted 15×7 wheels desirable.

I know it looks cool, but is there any performance advantage for the “Engine Turned” Dash?

Because of metal being taken off the dash from the process of making a turned dash, I’m a thinking it has to be faster, less weight go faster rule. 🤔

I wonder if the exhaust is now true duals/no cat.
The shaker hood scoop on ’77s is very low & hard to open up – wonder if an earlier one will fit.
These Grand Am(Cordovan?) & similar Grand Prix(Cordovan) tires are the most durable tires i have ever encountered. The earlier ’80s ones(bigger lettering & wider – 6 channels instead of 4 tho the same size!) were not as durable & it was time to replace them when the car started pulling to 1 side. Mine from the late 90’s have yet to – from Strauss Discount Auto who are out of business. Got a rebuilt $35 rochester monojet from them 33 yrs ago that’s still good.
