Resale Red: 1966 Porsche 911 Project

This 1966 Porsche 911 is a complete car with some rust repair needed, and at one time was given a fairly cheap paint job in what the seller describes as resale red. Despite being a collectible car now, it certainly wasn’t uncommon for a tired 911 to be given a respray that an owner or dealer felt was more suitable for a classic rear-engined sports car, but obviously those rules no longer apply in the current landscape. This 911 is a well-equipped example, with some of its original options still attached, including the wood-look dash trim. The seller is a familiar face around these parts, offered up by air-cooled Porsche specialist Unobtanium Inc. Find the 911 here on eBay with bidding to over $25K and the reserve unmet.

The 911 left the factory wearing “Light Ivory” paint, a very pretty shade that today would be much preferred over a red paint job – even if professionally done. All that is to say the era of every sports car needing to be painted red has thankfully past, and there’s way more appreciation for subdued colors that reflect the era in which the car was made. Body-wise, this 911 presents well, with no major damage noted to any of the exterior panels. There’s obviously rust in the floors just like any 911 that’s been sitting, but it could have been so much worst. The seller notes a parking sticker from Rutgers University indicates it was still being used in 1991.

Even the interior is better than you might expect for a long-slumbering car, and this 911 has the appearance of a car that simply stopped being used as opposed to being put out to pasture. The wood trim isn’t perfect, but it’s so rare to find it intact in any form that I’m sure the next owner will be happy to use it as a template for getting new pieces made. The 911 also appears to have a dash in largely sound condition, with perhaps one small nick taken out just past the 1:00 mark on the steering wheel. It’s also obvious the 911 was never modified or otherwise hot-rodded with its factory steering wheel and seats still installed.

The engine and transmission had been removed when the seller acquired the car, so perhaps plans for a restoration that never got off the ground is what put the 911 into long-term hibernation. The seller has re-installed the engine and transmission for transport purposes, but I doubt it’s been fully hooked up. Mileage is listed as being just over 77,000, so hopefully, the 911’s engine is numbers-matching given the odometer reading is fairly low. The bidding indicates potential buyers definitely see the potential for restoring this car without incurring a massive bodywork bill, as the photos seem to suggest rust is more manageable than compared to some of the 356s this seller has offered. Sad, but true: hey’ll never get any cheaper.

Man, do I wish I had bought a bunch of these jalopies years back. There seems to be a never ending supply of yokels with cash to lose. Of course, when I get to the Pearly Gates, I will have a clean conscience, if I had unloaded a bunch of these to foolish slow minded people, might have a lot of explaining to do.

Sounds like you speak from experience in terms of doing alot of explaining.

Again, not a Porsche freak, still chuckle at the styling of that “bathtub”, but this, I feel, is a much improved car. While even Porsche lovers have to admit, the bathtub is a glorified VW, this style, I bet, is a really neat car to drive. Not the newer ones, that got all swoopy with fins and 6 turbos, just a simple well engineered sports car. I think it would take a quarry full of cash to restore one, but well worth it, I’m sure, if not for resale someday, just to have one. This car was no VW.

I love Volkswagens. The older the better, the simpler the more desirable! Go to any random cars and coffee or car show and it seems like most everybody else is as big a fan of the VW as I am. Oh and by the way, I love Porsche as well.

This car is too rusty, but what is the story behind the chopped up 904 body visible in one of the photos?
