Rescued From The Cold: 1973 Peugeot 504

Often, cars are not all that different from those of us that own them: as we get old, systems and the body that houses them can slow down and become vulnerable to forces that never used to affect us, like the arrival of winter. This very original 1973 Peugeot 504 here on eBay with the reserve currently unmet reminds me of almost every older neighbor I have here in New England: when the time is right, they pulled up roots from a northern state and headed south to the more hospitable climate of Florida, where this car currently resides after being purchased by the seller from the original owners in New Hampshire. However, he didn’t get it out of our salt-encrusted climate soon enough and it will require some rust repair and patching along the floors and other low-hanging points to stay watertight. But with the interior already done and decent original paint, this seems like an example where some bodywork would be worth the investment.

It was a run of the mill beater car and some may have escaped.

I am just curious what this would bring.

A friend gave me one of these in Germany a couple of decades ago.
I drove it with a fried head gasket for a few times and honestly don’t even remember what happened to it, if I sold it or what……….(must have… )

When I was a kid my uncle had the family estate car (station wagon) version which had three rows of seats. He had a narrow escape when working on it once – was replacing a front coil spring and hadn’t clamped it properly and the spring came loose!

I have a house in a small rural village in France, an elderly neighbour has an immaculate white Peugeot 504 station wagon. It’s white, diesel and has a steering column mounted gearlever. Also in a nearby local garage there is a Pinninfarina 504 coupe that has sat unused for many years with some other old cars – very pretty car!

Here’s a photo of a 504 Pinninfarina coupe at a show in France last summer

Wow, a 504, my Dad´s car in the late 70´s. It was a bright orange one and the first family car i remember.

I too remember many travels to Italy for our summer vaccation. All 5 of us in the car, trunk and roof rack filled to the max, towing a camping trailer.
The car was very spacious and still to this day, my Dad mentions the car´s reliability.

Before the orange 504, he drove a red 504 and before that, a 404.
The orange one was later traded in for the all new Peugeot 505 and this was the last Peugeot my Dad drove. Engine troubles and lot´s of electrical faults…….

I don’t remember these as very good cars.
I just did some research on them and seems to me that for 1968 they were innovated.
    What was wrong with them?

Tom, there was a huge demand for those Peugeots from (North) Africa. I remember the times that I stayed there and went to the local car rental. I always asked them for an old Peugeot, reliable and easy to fix.
