Restoration Ready: 1966 Oldsmobile 442

It’s not hard to find a plethora of project cars when scanning the local classifieds. Finding one that is nearly complete definitely makes a project more desirable. Such is the case with this 1966 Oldsmobile 442, found here on Craigslist in Seneca, Kansas.

The seller of the 442 states that the car is nearly complete, minus the windshield, cowl panel, and some hardware. It’s pretty clear that this car needs a lot of work, some of which appears to have been started. There is little detail in the listing, but the pictures would indicate that the restoration work has already begun.

The big question mark with this project is the engine. The seller doesn’t give any details about what is supposed to be between the fenders. If original, it would be a 400 cubic inch V8. There was a variety of engine options for 1966, with the 350 horsepower four-barrel version being the most common. Interesting to note here is that there was an option for 400 with three two-barrel carbs. It’s more likely that this one would not have had the Tri-Power option.

Any interested parties would hopefully not run into this project with rose-colored glasses. Pictures of rust in the trunk indicate that this would need some serious work. A sample of sand blasting there revealed holes in the metal, so finding other trouble areas wouldn’t be surprising. Overall, this seems to be a decent project at a somewhat reasonable price. Would this one be worth investing the time, money, and energy into?

I have always loved the 66/67 Cutlass..,and being
the owner of a 67 Malibu, can say that the “Olds”
will stand out in a field full of GTO’s/Chevelle’s..!
A true 442..,is almost always worth saving, and hope
this one gets lotsa love!So sad that Oldsmobile is gone,
    along with Pontiac,and Plymouth..,and Mercury..in the last
15 years or so..! I wonder if any of these great brands
    will ever be revived..?

Beware!! The data plate does NOT have the required 5VY on it, designating a true 442. I’m just finishing my true 442 project, and a little research will show that is correct. In addition, I don’t see any holes in rear lower fender for the “442 emblem” that goes there. It’s probably a Cutlass Supreme with bucket seats etc.
Front fenders do have the correct cut outs for the Rocket inlay. Replacement fenders? Just do your homework first! Makes a BIG difference in value!
