Restore This Car: 1972 Cougar Convertible

'72 Cougar Con. barn

It appears that this Cat has been off the road since 1995.  Listed here on craigslist in St. Louis, Missouri, this 1972 Mercury Cougar Convertible is priced at $3K. It clearly is going to need a lot of work, but could have potential!

This Cougar features the 351 Cleveland with a 4 barrel carburetor. There were 1,929 XR-7 convertible models produced in 1972, so this is a rather rare car. There isn’t any history of ownership or if the engine spins or runs mentioned by the seller.

The owner wants this car to go where it will be restored. They say there is a clean history and suggests you look it up by the plate number. It seems strange that they didn’t just post said history in their ad, but we guess this works too.

There is a small amount of information given in the ad. It has A/C, PS, PB and the convertible top still has the glass window in it. We have shared all the images posted with the ad so if you are interested please contact the owner for more images and/or information. We don’t know why the hood is disconnected, any ideas? Is the 351 Cleveland still in this Cat?  We hope that saving this Cougar makes  sense for someone and gets her back on the road again soon.

Motor-on,
Robert

Wow 3K is a lofty ask for this mouse-house.

Well, now, let’s see…it’s basically a Mercury Mustang, a convertible, a 351 Cleveland 4-barrel, the body is unwrecked, it still has its top intact and it was apparently under some sort of cover. It’s not a car that you’re going to see fifty more of at cruise night. Except for the Mercury-specific stuff, replacement parts should be readily available and relatively cheap, and it’s relatively easy to work on. I don’t know that 3K is unreasonable.
If you took that same 3K and went to buy something on the typical used car lot, what do you imagine you would end up with for that kind of money?

And the answer is: an ’05 Pontiac Starfire with 4-banger (just bought it).

He might get 3K if it was at least running. I’d say 2K max on this one.
The 351C 4V is a nice bonus. I bet this car gets parted out.

I agree about the parting out… I wondered if that’s why the hood was removed, to start the process of removing said engine.

This one is do-able.. Might need more than shallow pockets, but it’s a nice semi-luxury convertible.. Yes, same-same Mustang platform, but just a tip up on class if you want to go there.. Convertibles are always a good find.
