RPO Y84: 1980 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Update 3/6/20 – The seller has dropped their asking price by $3k to $13,950 here on eBay!

From 2/22/20 – The feathers of the mighty Trans Am were getting a little frayed by 1980. The base engine in the WS4 optioned Trans Am was the 301 cubic inch V8 engine which 3 years before was introduced as an economic engine in the Grand Prix. This 1980 Pontiac Trans Am is located in Headingley, Manitoba, Canada and can be seen here on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $16,950.

One thing special about this car is that the original owner selected the Y84 option which means it is a black and gold special edition version. This costs an extra $748 in 1980 when the car was not optioned with T-tops. While the seller does not show many close up shots, the ad describes rust in the doors, rear quarters and fenders. In addition to having been optioned with the lowly 301 cubic inch V8 engine, the car is clad in 7-inch snowflake wheels which indicates that it does not have the famed WS6 Special Handling package. The horsepower for the 301 cubic inch engine was up 5 horsepower to 150 horsepower in 1980 and produced a wheezy 235 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm.

The interior is well worn with a hunk taken out of the steering wheel and the seats look to have the incorrect fabric or hobnail material. The dash has been cut to add an aftermarket radio, too. Fitted with the Turbo 350 three-speed automatic transmission, the seller says the car runs but the transmission needs to be rebuilt. The exhaust is also incorrect but exits behind the rear tires.

So, this car is a project. The seller is asking $16,950. What do you think it is worth? There were over 50,000 Trans Ams built in 1980 but collectors seem to be appreciating the turbo cars of the era instead of the naturally aspirated Trans Ams. Regardless, this car has some good attributes to consider.

He is going to be looking a long time for a 67 Trans Am convertible…since the TA came out in 69 and all 8 of them have been accounted for…

Thumbs up, it’s still a Pontiac not a Oldsmobile, 301 had no power however, cars worth 7500.00, and then you gotta put a warmed over 400 in it, and the rest, and now its non matching #s, so it’s a keeper cause it’s not worth anything

I know what it’s like to cheer for the underdog John, I’m a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Keep cheering for that 301 boat anchor. If it was mine, I would swap a 500 cubic inch Cadillac in it and piss off everyone. Tons of torque all day long!

it really looks like it was waxed to near death. most of the pin stripes are polished away. any who, this BLACK TA would be the perfect gift for that GOTH loving grand son or GOTH loving grand daughter who really loves there nanny or there pappy. perfect for that cruising scene . and hey it probably gets decent gas mileage. dont even touch it. drive it the way it is . just watch that your lip chain or nose chain doesnt get caught in the decaying foam steering wheel. perfect for that connected family when nanny or pappy needs a ride to the grocery store. cruise it into the ground and appreciate every minute of it, or every mile of the drive. now thats a TA that you can love…

I love my Barnfinds that comes everyday.I read it daily.I have seen a few honest mistakes by the writer of a particular car,Which a knowledgeable gear head politely corrects. But has anyone politely corrected any one of the authors that incorrectly stated in the description of a Trans Am that it had a 400 cu.in when I can clearly see “6.6 Litre” on the shaker? Or saying a ’78 with “T/A 6.6” was the only engine available in California? Lol

If it says 6.6 liter it’s not a 1980 or shaker is not original to the car. The last year for the 6.6 was 1979 and they either had 6.6 liter of 400 CID on the shaker with either a Pontiac 400 or an Oldsmobile 403 engine under the hood. Beginning in 1980 they had the 301 or 305 cu engine so the shaker had 4.9 or 5.0 on it.
