Rust-Free 4×4: 1986 Dodge Power Ram W150

This beefy 4×4 is aptly named Power Ram. It certainly looks as if it could climb mountains and bust through walls. A few decades ago, the Big Three would stick to a basic truck design for years. Chevy kept the Squarebody around from 1973 to 1987. Ford kept the Bullnose (and its successors) on dealer lots from 1980 to 1996. Dodge outplayed them all – the Ram maintained this basic styling from 1972 to 1993. Even so, finding one this clean is a challenge these days.

Rust is the bane of the classic car (or truck) owner’s existence. According to the seller, this truck is a rust-free, accident-free, two-owner Utah truck. Look at those rocker panels.

Seriously, those factory spot welds are a myth in many parts of the country; trucks of the ’70s and ’80s weren’t known for their corrosion resistance. I delivered automotive paint for a summer in the mid-’90s, and we would keep Squarebody fenders in the shop because they sold so well. Dodge never enjoyed quite the aftermarket popularity of the Chevy, so starting with dry fenders and rockers is a huge head start.

Even the interior of this Ram looks untouched from the new. I’d immediately replace the Harley-Davidson floor mats, but aside from an aftermarket radio, it’s 1986 again, and you’re looking out over the hood at that larger-than-life Ram hood ornament.

Even the door jambs and cab corners look good. There might be a touch of rust near the seam, but that also might be a photographic reflection. When you’re nit-picking that closely, it’s a solid truck.

The bed shows signs of use, but doesn’t seem to have any major dents or corrosion. The seller is open about the fact that the paint is mostly original with some touchups and falls into the “patina” category.

The Power Ram sounds like it’s ready to enjoy: It has new tires, shocks, exhaust, and battery. Under the hood, it has a 360 and a rebuilt automatic with 21,500 miles on it. According to the ad, the whole truck has only been driven 100,000 miles.

This truck is currently on eBay with a high bid of $11,100 and more than three days to go on the auction; considering how rust-free and clean it is, that should come as no surprise. Restoring a rusty example takes time and money – why not get a head start with this dry Western Ram?

It’s a beautiful truck but that leading picture makes me want to call this the JJ Abram’s edition. Look at that Lens flare!

Had me a 250 with the 360 in it. Solid truck, bench seat locking hubs, strong truck for plowing those New England driveways and parking lots with that ever dependable Meyers plow.
Miss that ol truck. Why can’t Ram just build something so simple that all would flock to buy

I’m sure this question has been answered before. The government won’t let you and the public won’t buy it if they did. It costs the same money to build/buy a loaded car/truck as a stripper.
