Rust Free Square Body: 1979 Chevrolet Big 10

Based on Chevrolet C10 body styles from the sixties and early seventies, we never thought we would be seeing them use the “square body” styling for so long, but Chevrolet used this body style for 15 years, from 1973 to 1987. There is quite a bit of interest in this body style these days. Here is a 1979 Chevrolet C10 Silverado Big 10 for sale here on eBay in Lyons, Kansas.

Each barn finds vehicle has its own unique story. I think we enjoy those stories as much as seeing the vehicles on the Barnfinds site. This one is fresh out of storage from the barn that the dealer purchased from the original owner. It has been locked away in a storage building since 1996. Although we don’t know this, I can imagine it was time for its owner to purchase a new vehicle, took it to the dealer for a trade on a new truck, they offered next to nothing on the trade, and he went home and put it back in the shed after purchasing a new truck.

This C10 has a long eight-foot bed, which means it has a wheelbase of 131.5 inches. The bed shows normal wear. It appears maybe something was sitting in the bed for a number of years and it may have a little surface rust going on there, but the seller is saying it is a rust free truck. The paint and body are in good condition considering the age of the truck. The Big 10 option gave this truck heavy-duty suspension components and brake system. The Silverado trim gave it full tailgate inserts, but mostly interior upgrades. The truck has two-tone paint finish as many of the upper model C10s of this era did.

I don’t know what it is about Chevrolet C10s from this era, but it seems at least half of them I see for sale have this pattern seat cover. The seller says the interior is nice, but apparently the seats are not nice enough to take that cover off and let us see what they really look like (seller says it could use a new seat cover). Other than that, It does appear the dash is in good shape while the carpeting is showing some normal wear and stains. The power windows, radio, fan blower, and cruise control all work. The Silverado trim gave it bright brushed finish on the instrument panel and doors, color-keyed carpeting on lower door panels, and custom cloth or vinyl seats.

This is a 350 cubic inch V-8 4 barrel engine and it runs. The odometer is showing 28,000 which is believed to be 128,000 or possibly 228,000 miles. The truck needs wheel cylinders, brake lines, and tires to make it road worthy, and since it has been sitting for an extended period of time, there may be other issues that will need addressing. This C10 has dual gas tanks, with both tanks holding 20 gallons of fuel.

Yes, this truck will need some mechanical attention, but I don’t feel like it will be anything too major. Wouldn’t it be nice riding around in a truck from this era?

Current bid is $2550.00 with 2 days left. If it stays under $3500.00 it would be worth a gamble. The nice thing about a Big 10 is it has a slightly higher GVWR than a normal 1/2 ton. That exempted it from having a catalytic converter and having to run unleaded gas.

Also 1988-1991 for the Square Body Suburban. So 19 years.

Rust free. I would have to see it to believe it. No single make has done more to create the Japanese aftermarket replacement body parts market then the 73-79 GMC/Chevy truck.

I remember our local department store very well. In the automotive section they had replacement fenders and patch panels for these trucks. On the end cap you had the plastic filler and sandpaper.

Ah, brick and mortar at it’s finest.
