Rusty Runner: 1966 Ford Fairlane GTA

right front

The Fairlane was all new for 1966 and included a GT version. The GT has a 335 horsepower 390 with a 3 speed stick, power steering and power brakes. The GTA is essemtially the same except it has an automatic. This GTA listed on eBay really looks nice from this angle, doesn’t it? This is a great example of how clever photography can make a rusted mess look great. Fortunately, the seller included lots of detailed pictures showing the extent of the rust. It runs and drives and is said to have a solid body even with all the rust. With 4 days left and 22 bids so far, bidding is over $3,800 and has not reached reserve.

seats

The interior looks great for this old of a car. The vinyl seats might be brittle, but if not, recovering the driver’s seat could make the interior usable. The carpet covers the rust holes in the floor quite nicely.

ehgine

The engine runs and doesn’t smoke.

rust

The seller provided lots of detailed pictures of the underside and they are not pretty.

left rear rust

The quarter panels, rockers, doors and floors all need serious rust repair. Is there any way this car could be repaired for less than what it’s worth? This GTA looks too far gone to be a driver. What do you think someone will be willing to pay for this GTA? From the bids, it looks like this isn’t being bought for a parts car.

Had a 66 2 door post (52K original old lady miles) and was so rust rotted that it split right at the front torque boxes to the point it bacame unsafe to drive.

Ya, Ex-wife’s father gave her one of these at HS graduation,,, trans was holding the two halves together! Gave her twin brother the OHC 6 full framed Tempest.
When the mounts were finished on the Ford, the steering shaft was the only thing left! It broke entering the junk yard, lol!
Worth an extra $50 for driving it in , ha ha!.

looks like it could be saved, but is it worth it?
a guy at the local car show has a non GT Fairlane (XLT?) with the same 390/335 and C-6 tranny, bet it is rarer than a GT/GTA.

The 390/335 in the GT/GTA was an ‘S’ code car. The 390 in the XL was a ‘Z’ code and was rated at 315 HP. They are not the same motor.

Here in TN, in my neck of the woods, a 3-speed stick refers to a 3-speed manual transmission which these cars never came equipped with.

I don’t know about a 1966, but in high school I had a1967 fairlane 500 XL and it had a 390 with a 3-speed on the floor. Another one I wish I would of put away.

The standard trans in the ’66 GT was a 3 speed manual. The 4 speed and automatic (which made it a GTA) were optional. My dad and uncle both bought brand new ’66 Fairlanes. My uncle’s was a 4 speed GT and my dad’s was an automatic GTA. A guy that worked at the local Ford dealer where my dad and uncle ordered their’s ordered a new ’66 GT and his was a 3 speed in the floor.
