Seen Better Days: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am 10th Anniversary

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In 1979, the Pontiac Trans Am was 10 years old so what do you do, produce a Tenth Anniversary Edition Trans Am! Pontiac built 7,500 Tenth Anniversary Trans Ams, also known as, TATA cars by Pontiac enthusiasts. They were loaded with every option and painted silver and charcoal with a silver leather interior. This example is located in Snellville, Georgia and has seen better days. It is listed here on eBay for a Buy It Now Price of $14,500. There are 27 days remaining in the listing and the seller will consider Best Offers.

This Tenth Anniversary Edition Trans Ams is rusty and the passenger fender has been replaced with a used red one. As mentioned, these cars were completely loaded and the factory interior for the featured silver leather upholstery similar to the silver leather interior used in the 1978 Corvette Pace car. In terms of options, every Tenth Anniversary Trans Am came with WS6 performance suspension, tilt steering, T-tops, ETR radio, power antenna, power windows, power locks, and rear defrost. One of my favorite features of the Tenth Anniversary Edition Trans Am is the red backlit dash lights. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of the interior of this car.

Of the 7,500 Tenth Anniversary production, two engines were available. Pontiac built 5,683 Tenth Anniversary Trans Ams with the L80 Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 and automatic transmission. It came with a hood scoop designation of 6.6 Litre. This engine was rated at 185 horsepower and was a smooth running cruiser that still had a respectable amount of torque. The remaining 1,817 Tenth Anniversary Trans Ams were built with the W72 Pontiac 400 engine and 4-speed manual transmission like this one. The W72 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine was rated at 220 horsepower and came with chrome valve covers and a hood scoop designation of T/A 6.6.

All Tenth Anniversary Trans Ams cars were optioned with the WS6 special performance handling package which included 15×8 turbo wheels, bigger sway bars, tuned shocks and a tighter steering gear box. From the dealer lot, the MSRP for these cars in 1979 exceeded $10,000 which was a lot of money in the day. As shown, this car has aftermarket tires that are barely holding air. This car will need a complete restoration. This car is being sold without a title and on a bill of sale only.

How did this happen? What a horrible state of affairs. And no interior shots. Great combo with the 400 and 4 speed but $14k?? This thing needs a total nuts and bolt resto. Better have deep pockets for this one.

It’s amusing to see what people start asking for a pile of abused junk, when the “collectors” start paying stupid money for that model.

Decisions, decisions-does one considers buying this mismatched junkyard dog with no interior/underside photos and no title for $14,500 or spend the extra $4000 for the really nice one with the mismatched 455 that Bruce wrote up yesterday?

    Tough choice…NOT.

Did this special edition just return from oribiting the earth with those space suit colored cool silver covers? I think the reentry did a number on the paint…. I like this engine and transmission on the car but for the price its sat outside way to much..

Good luck on the sale and I do hope it gets restored.

FYI: I remember this model in my youth seeing this car and being jelly on the car logos plus seat covers.. I was driving my 1969 Z28 beater (needed paint and carpet) that I built up the original engine then ran it hard and raced on weekends…. but (hey it was over a decade old car meant to exercise the poinies.. :-)

Too many mint ones for sale that are turn key or have 6 actual miles. These were almost collectible in 79. How in the hell can someone let this car turn to dog crap? I will never understand that. I drive a 30 year old mini van in 50 times better condition than this pile. Paid $1,900 for it 11 years ago. It is my daily.

A common theme here-“how’d they let this get this bad??” Easy answer-“I’ll get around to it..” complacency burned this bird. It’d be surprising to see it rise again from these ashes.

If you want a 79 this is the one to have. The right engine, suspension and the limited edition stuff make it the best of that year. That said, this wasn’t the best year for gen 2 birds and I had a 79 that I bought new back then. The nose is awkward and the motors aren’t nearly as strong as earlier ones. Quality control on these was non existent by 79. Not having a title is a total deal breaker, even if it was there it’s overpriced. Given what it will take to restore it, someone is going to be deep underwater if was done even nearly close to correctly. Hard pass on this one.

I will leave another comment. The add says it runs and i know a engine will run without a radiator but this one is missing a lot more. Hopefully other than than the stolen radiator the rest of the parts are still in the trunk. There is no battery. Maybe it ran when parked decades ago. Also like other comments way more pictures would be needed even if it s hard to do. Also the price is way too high.

If you are going to try for $14k you should put in the work and have pictures taken of everything. The write-up in Barn Finds added more interest and value to the car than the photos .

      10/11/25-“Accepting offers”.
Judging by what we see here it might be a neighborly thing for someone to offer their services to bring over the plasma cutter and a trailer.

Wondering if it got into an accident and then started to replace body panels and lost interest or ran out of time? The seller states has the original hood and front bumper to the car but doesn’t mention what shape they are in and no pictures. Driver door gap at the front fender kinda tight and a tarp conveniently hiding possible damage. Hmmmm…..

Hopefully it comes with $12500 in the trunk

Total pile of 💩 and there’s NO title? Who cares if it’s a 10th anniversary or a base bird, it is still just a steaming pile of dog poo

I have to drive through Atlanta to get to Snellville from where I live. Maybe if I roll down the windows on the way, I will inhale enough funny stuff that will convince me that this is worth anyway near the asking price.

It would be interesting to do a nationwide search with the VIN. I think the odds are strong that this was stolen.
