Shelby Sham: 1968 Mustang Fastback

We would like to believe that this 1968 Mustang fastback project might be a real Shelby GT350 for cheap money. It has a Shelby dash, shifter, dash plate, and the body panels say Shelby on them, but the rational side of our brain and the VIN makes us think it is just a Mustang project with some Shelby parts thrown on. Find it here on eBay in Oil Springs, Kentuckey, where you can be the judge.

This Mustang has been owned by the seller since 2007 and comes with some useful extra parts. They dont make any claims about it being a Shelby and the VIN indicates that the car is a 1968 fastback that was originally equipped with a C-code 2-barrel V8 engine. The photos show a car that is mostly complete, but that has spent most of its life in the rust belt, so a good pre-purchase inspection of the body is in order.

The seller says that he had the engine running soon after he bought the car, but that it has not been used since. The engine has some of the typical period dress-up items including some Cobra valve covers, but plan on a full rebuild based on a  lack of recent use and the car’s 98,000 miles on the odometer.

The dash appears to be from a Shelby, but it seems to have been installed after the car left the factory. It would be very nice to retain the dash, but it will require some careful work to bring it back to its former state. That steering wheel almost looks correct, but not quite.

Quite a few spares come with the car, including what looks like a GT350 front fender. Although the undercarriage photos show some rust, they suggest that the frame and body may not be  terminally rusty. But a thorough inspection of the underside is very important to determine whether the car is structurally sound enough to justify a complete restoration.

Here is a shot of that dash plaque. Sure makes you wonder what happened to the rest of the car that donated all those Shelby parts…

He must have found some other use for the fan belts and radiator hoses after he got it running.

I keep thinking about that Cadillac song by Johnny Cash when I look at this. All in all would be a nice project car. When finished it would still be just a really nice Mustang but not a true numbers matching Shelby.

I would like to have it just to have something to mess with. I have always wanted a 60s mustang fastback and the 68 is my favorite. I just wouldn’t want to spend a lot of money on it because I would mostly use it to terrorize the neighborhood. One thing to check for to see if it is a real Shelby body is to see if the air scoops on the sides are functional or not.

When I see this I see the possibility that a major structural issue was found and a bail is in order. Sometimes just cash, time, discipline etc are the reason(s) either way extreme care is in order.

This looks like a project that Revology Cars in Orlando or Classic Restorations in Oklahoma could sink their teeth into since they build genuine Shelby Mustangs under license.
