Side Pipes! 1978 Dodge Good Times Van

I must admit when I first ran across this one I wasn’t too excited. I thought it was just another conversion van to make all of the usual jokes about. However, after a second look, this van is solid, has the look, and it’s a genuine Good Times Conversion. I would preserve the exterior, leaving it like it is, completely remodel the inside with modern camping amenities and update the drive train possibly with a modern late-model Hemi. The possibilities are endless and the price is reasonable enough at $3900 BIN find it here on eBay in Fruita, Colorado.

This Dodge started life as a normal B series van, probably a Sportsman model. The conversion was done when brand new by the “Good Times” company in Texas, they were one of the best-known conversion companies of the day. This looks like a mild conversion based on some others we have seen. On the exterior custom paintwork was applied and the awesome side pipes and wheels were added. Inside it looks like most of the custom interior has been removed, we can see what looks like a pedestal for a table and floor to ceiling gray carpet. A modern interior with a bed, refrigerator, and flat-screen TV would be perfect.

The dash area needs some work but it would clean up nicely, the overhead console has some wiring hanging but that should be easy to sort out. Mileage is said to be below 90K and that’s believable because it has been off the road since the ’90s. The 318 runs and has received a tune-up along with cleaning of the fuel system. It is described as driving and stopping but has not been road-tested because of the old tires. I would install a 383 HP 5.7 Crate Engine and late model automatic but keep the original look. Of course, a C/B radio is a must along with modern Bluetooth stereo.

The van scene is popular, more and more people are embracing the van life culture, especially with the current state of things camping is very popular. There is even a Good Times Van Company in business now although it does not seem to have any affiliation with the original company that did this conversion. This will be a fun project whichever direction you want to approach it. There is some rust mentioned under a door but that is not a deal-breaker. If you’re looking for a fun family camper project check this one out.

Like I said on the A series van, this was the van my old man had the roof cut open and that “McDonalds” top put on. These ( before the top) were a much improved unit over the A series. While still tough to work on, they rarely needed it. They had updated suspension, heater/AC , comfy vans that would cruise for miles. Probably the most popular van for conversions. I have a friend that had a shorter custom van like this, did a lot of cruisin’ in that, and while I don’t think a hemi is required, a slanty did just fine,, a CB radio and twin antennas on the mirrors, is a must. Good Times,,,DYNOMITE!!!

I sold Good Times Vans in Sioux Falls SD in 70s and would fly to Dallas and pickup at Good Times building and drive back to Sioux Falls!😁
