Silly Stretch: 1970 Mercedes-Benz 250

Here’s a short one, I mean, the post, not the car. This crazy, stretched car is listed by the seller as a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 250. Maybe the front clip is, up to the dark, weird spot on the hood, or whatever is under the stretched portion. Is that whole thing the hood? Does the whole thing open up? Who knows. This odd creation is on Craigslist in Lake Stevens, Washington, just northeast of Everett. They’re only asking $500 for this car, and it sure would be interesting to drive around, wouldn’t it? And, it doesn’t even look like it’s in horrible condition from this photo. This one, lone, single, solitary photo in the ad.

The front clip does look like it could be a Mercedes-Benz 250 but, upon first glance, the rear end sure looks like a “Pagoda/SL” car to me. Maybe the rear end is deceiving because of the modified roof, maybe it is the C-pillar of a W114 250 coupe, or, more likely, a 250 sedan with their thinner C-pillars and a modified 250 sedan roof? It looks like it even has a sunroof. I would sure love to see more photos of this car. For having so much extra room with the hood extension, why did they have to modify the roof so much? Obviously, they were going after a two-seater look like the Seville Opera Coupe craze and other cars that were heavily-modified in the Super Fly era that we know and love as the 1970s. The only info that the seller is giving out is that it’s a “very unique car, gets lots of looks. Runs and drives. Have drove for couple years.” I’m guessing that is supposed to be haven’t driven for a couple of years. So, yeah, that’s all I’ve got on this one. Basically there are two questions, what are the parts and pieces from, and $500 – yea or nay?

Looks like you’re sitting on the rear bench, in the back of what once was a sedan. The seam of a regular hood can be seen. Restore, drive and park in front of a Benz dealership just to annoy them :)

Yup right across the street from it so they can’t kick you off their property. Then hold them for randsome so you will move it. LMAO

Still better than those rust bucket Porsches. It will also increase length and girth.

Does it have a removable top or is the car is holding down the canvas garage?
Can’t tell but there may be a matching tire carrier on the driver’s side – that would certainly make this a more balanced vehicle. But the real deal killer is there is no comment as to whether the AC needs a recharge.

You know it does. They all do. That is all that’s wrong with it though. If it had a check engine light, all it would need would be to rest it.

This thing is nutty! The door and roof are all 250 sedan—the door skin is just the rear door of the sedan (note the scalloped cutline at the front), with the glass a hybrid of the front and rear door glass. Like everyone else, I am very, very curious about the rope looped through the cabin…

I think it’s been nailed, this appears to be a sedan with the front doors welded shut and the roof modified, so it’s not a stretch after all! I like it even more now. I like the fact that someone wanted to practice up on their design and welding skills. Maybe the original car wasn’t worth restoring before this happened, that’s the only hope that I have…

I am no expert on MB’s but it seems to me there is more than $500.00 worth of parts. Just going on that everyone says MB’s parts are expensive.

The bumpers alone could bring $300 on a bad day. $100 for the grille, $80 for the ornament, $200 for an uncracked dash, and maybe another $250 if the original wheel and horn pad are in good shape. As an enthusiast of the W114/W115, there’s plenty I would want to take off this car if it was truly a lost cause.

Back in the late 60s, on Route 33 between Columbus and Lancaster Ohio, there was a 55 Mercury on a tall steel pole, advertising some kind of auto shop. As a kid I was just fascinated at how they got that car up there.

And so this would be the perfect use for this Mercedes…put it up on a pole in front of your repair shop. Brilliant!

Yeah Rex and scare all your prospective customers away, I don’t think so, it would potentially demonstrate what a crap mechanic you are to even consider owning an abomination like that, as well as relying on it to advertise your business !

I think it is a removable hardtop. By the looks of the C pillar, it looks like it came from a 350 or 450SL.

I would have given $500 for this thing sight-unseen if I lived in that area. Paying $1,500 in shipping for a non-operational vehicle going cross-country wasn’t super appealing to me, though.

What a hoot! You’d never another sitting beside you at a traffic light. The rope holds the tent in place in case of wind storms. I’m glad Texas is too far away for a look see, I’d be dragging it home. If nothing else the dogs could use it to escape the brutal summer sun.

I now live in Houston, I once lived in Everett, Washington I wouldn’t have driven from there to see that abomination let alone from Texas. It does show someone had some kind of vision and tried their best to act upon it.

Start with this car, and experiment with the tandem engine idea, then transfer the powertrain to that stretched Cord 810 from BF write up a few months back. You’d only be out the $500 + $30,000 for the Cord before doing any cosmetic work. LMAO
