We believe that you don’t have to be going fast to have fun. There are a few cars that go slow but feel fast and the Fiat 850 Sport Spider is one of them. Pick up this slow but fun 1972 Fiat 850 Spider on eBay with a starting bid of $1,825. The seller is located in Danville, California so if you live in the area go check it out and let us know how it looks.
One of the things we like the most about this car is its color. We aren’t sure whether this is the original paint or not, but it looks good and only has a few problem areas. Italian cars from this era tend to rust out, but we can’t find any serious rust on this car. We would be sure to check the underside and side skirts for any thin spots that might suggest rust.
This interior looks completely original and for the most part in great condition. The seats look to be the only things needing more than just a good cleaning. We would either get these seats recovered or we would find some period racing buckets. As an added bonus this car comes with the soft top, the hard top, and a Tonneau cover, so it can provide year around fun.
This small 900cc engine only produces 50 hp, but remember this car only weights about 1,600 lbs. The seller claims the engine runs great and has recently been tuned up. Given the originality of this car we would probably just leave it as is and enjoy some open top driving.
Now I use to own a 850 Fiat Coop… it might say it’s slow on here but I use to race Corvet’s off the line… would usually beat them in first and 2nd gear…then they would fly on by me. Once I took on a 396 chev’ all jacked up … I beat him off the line… till the Police cat that was right behind us got both of us for race’n… it truly wasn’t a race cause I only had 85 horse power stock motor with a blown head gasket’ to boot …and they let me go. I ran it from day one till it died on me all together. one of the best car’s I had ever owned….the 68′ Fiat 850 was truly a very nice and small car to own and drive… had a lot of fun with it as well to.
50 well utilized hp, the excelleration was not blazing but it kept up with traffic for its day. Mine was a 1972 850 spyder and yes it was slow and in its top (4th) gear it was screaming at 4000 rpm at 55 or 60 mph. I had many good times in that little car. If my garage was not already bulging at the seams with cars I wouldn’t hesitate to get this one and resume the fun 44 years later. Mine was also lime green.
