Some Assembly Required: 1967 Mustang Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

A Shelby GT350 would be best, but my dream factory-built Mustang has gotta be a ’67 convertible with a V8 and a 4-speed. This particular project fits the bill and even has power front disc brakes! Unfortunately, it was pulled apart 17 years ago and never put back together. It’s usually a bad idea to take on someone’s unfinished project, but Mustang parts supply and support are so good that this shouldn’t be too hard. It’s located in New Lebanon, Ohio and is listed here on eBay where bidding is at $4,000 with a day left. If I didn’t already have so many projects, I’d be bidding on this one myself!

I don’t see a motor or tranny. Headers look like a small Ford setup but still don’t know if there’s a motor to come with it. It would help although I have a 302 in the shop that would go in quite well. I might add that I’m not fussy about headers. I had them on my ’68 GT and I’m sure that the underhood temp rose by at least 100 degrees. One winter and they were perforated with holes. Back to the manifolds…

Have to give the seller credit for the way he photographed it. Parts neatly arranged around the car in a clean garage, showing that it is possible to get this back on the road.

Don’t pat him on the back too much, this car reeks of a theft recovery car. I would check the title really carefully, and ask questions.

Floors look to have been replaced and patched by an amateur. The welds are pretty blobby. The rear quarter caps don’t meet the body lines right so I suspect repaired accident damage in the right rear corner. Vin provided in listing decodes as 289-2v, so not sure why car would have “big block” shock towers. Because engine is missing, I suppose previous owner was going to swap a big bLock in? Why include old headers and distributors if there is no engine? Same with bell housing and fly wheel.
Could be a nice project for cheap if it stays close to opening bid, but it needs more work that just bolting it all back together again.

Even a true big block 1967 Mustang/Cougar did not have the larger braces on the shock towers. Those did not appear until late in the 1968 model year. Someone has added those braces. And as has been noted, this car is a C code 289 2V small block car originally. The larger braces do not hurt anything as long as the welds are good, unless the next owner wants a 100% correct restored car. Then they will need to go. But I doubt that this car will receive that type of restoration. More likely a good candidate for a resto mod.

Jesse, I spotted an abandoned project in the local classifieds – MGB GT, bare shell on the rotisserie and lots of parts! $2.5k CDN, let me know if you want to feature it!

Oh, and one of the car mags I work for did a full resto on a ’67 Mustang ‘vert since it was both their 50th, and the car’s. Seeing this one all taken apart is familiar!

It also is a “deluxe interior” car, but it looks like someone already made off with the rare hard shell seat backs that will set you back a $1,000 for a super nice set.

I’m just curious what the original color of the car was? This shouldn’t be to tough to restore, great parts availability and lots of technical support. I think its one of the best first timer project cars to work with. Good luck to the new buyer.

I’m old school when it comes to doing a restoration.. The floor pan welding is 5th grade, but you have to give some credit for trying.. The owner should have farmed out the patch job.. Maybe some grinding will smooth out those seams..

This could be a good project to finish off, but a lot more money will need to be ponied up (no pun here) to make this car a winner..

I like it and hope someone will do a great job of completing the project put it back on the road. Great car and great find.

I’d guess that the flipper here swiped those missing seat shells and the simulated wood deluxe interior steering wheel instead of the standard one. But hey, it has the ‘oh so rare’ deluxe interior door panels that look like they were driven over a few times. This car will bury you with all the smalls that are missing. And beware of black primered cars. That hides a LOT of sins, especially for the camera. 4k is more than I put into it.
