Southern Rust-Free Charm: 1986 Chevrolet C-10

As the seller says, “These C10s are getting harder to find everyday and especially a short bed like this one in this type of condition.” I spend a lot of time looking at cars. A LOT. I can’t help but click the ad every time I see a shortbed 2WD 1960s-1980s truck posted. I love these things. I think a lot of people love these things. Can we all agree that the seller is correct in their description of this one? This 1986 Chevrolet C10 was sent to us by an anonymous reader. It can be found here on eBay in Spring, Texas where 49 bids have pushed the price of this no reserve auction to $7,900 at the time of writing.

By no means is this a mint condition truck. It looks to be a pretty honest presentation, as the seller notes there is minor hail damage on the hood and roof. There are some other chips and dings, and one mismatched tire, but nothing unexpected from a 34-year old truck.  Aside from the once sun-faded roof, this C10 wears its original paint. Before the previous owner purchased and moved the truck to Texas in 1999, this C10 lived it’s first 13 years in Mississippi. The lack of rust supports that story.

Sporting the high-end Silverado trim, the blue interior matches the condition of the exterior. The brushed aluminum instrument panel, gauges in place of warning lights, door pull straps, and lower door panel carpeting were all part of the Silverado package. The carpeted dash cover is concealing a cracked dash, the bench seat has some tears, the headliner needs to be replaced, and the carpet shows some wear. Don’t worry, this is an air-conditioning equipped truck.

There was originally a 4.3L V6 under the hood, but you will now find a crate 350, which the seller claims has less than 20k miles. There is no explanation given, but the engine was replaced under prior ownership. The seller says it runs and shifts perfect, with no shakes, pulls, rattles, smoke, or leaks. There is an A/C leak the seller plans to have repaired before the new owner takes possession. Power steering, power brakes, and the Turbo 350 transmission should make this easy to drive.

Coming full circle, clean, honest trucks like this are getting harder to find. While it’s tempting to make some of the modifications the seller had planned in their listing description, they really are only original once.

It isn’t fully original anymore because of the engine. Honestly though if no one goes too overboard it wouldn’t hurt a darn thing to give it fresh paint and anything needed in the interior. It would present much better and would actually increase the value instead of decreasing it.

Do you think many potential buyers will devalue such a C10 when equipped with a 350 instead of the original V6?

That’s what I did to my 86 long bed out with the 4.3 and in with the 355 and elderbrock goodies it’s differently worth more then the 4.3

I agree with you about these trucks, I like them too. Just from the pictures and being an optomist, this truck could be a great buy, if you want to do all the fun stuff to a C-10. Lowered , paint, tires & wheels, and interior. With th prices these are bringing, you could probably make money on it.
