Stalled Race Project: 1962 Mini Cooper

If you are in the Baltimore, Maryland area or will be traveling there in the near future, the owner of this project would like potential buyers, if that’s you, to stop by and see this project in person! This 1962 Mini Cooper race car is being offered here on eBay with a reserve not met and a current bid of $3,300 at the time of writing.

According to the owner, this car was imported in 1990. It was purchased with the intent to repair and race it. We don’t know if this owner imported the car in 1990 or how long they have owned it. They claim they had a vintage race shop look the car over and after there assessment, it seems the owner now doesn’t have the time (and/or money?) to move this project forward. Unfortunately we have heard this report many times before.

There are many parts with the car and other images in the ad for your review. There is some work that needs to be done with the floor pans.

The engine is not in the car but a fuel cell is. The owner was told that the engine had been “gone though”, but there is no proof of that. They ask you to please respond if you have any questions. This will be a project that you will have to puzzle back together to even be a driver, but it sure would be fun once it’s done. Does this make sense to you and at what cost? Maybe the next owner picks this project up and pieces it back together into a driver and not a racer?

Motor-on,

Robert

I got in a little hot water over the Spitfire race car a while back, but this is the way to go. It’s almost ready, and Mini Coopers are fun cars to race and watch. Ever see them lift the inside rear wheel around corners? Years ago, when I had my MGB, I came across a guy with a Mini Cooper “S”, and I asked if he’d trade even up. A resounding “NO” was all he said. Very cool car.

If I could do the welding myself this would be a great car to race up the Pikes Peak Hill Climb when I visit my son in Colorado, but the old eyes can’t do the welding thing anymore.

This is at least the second time thru eBay for this one. Don’t know what his reserve is but it hasn’t gotten the love it needs. I miss my ’67 Cooper every day (as does my wife)……….

I sure miss my’65 Cooper 1275 as well but it needed so much rust repair that I couldn’t do myself or afford to have done professionally. It was so much fun to drive though!

The engine does have the appearance of having been at least somewhat detailed, it doesn’t seem to have been given the “Let’s paint the whole assembly, who cares about over spray from my rattle can” treatment. But those engines do benefit from numerous upgrades, it would be good to know the details of “Having been gone through”.

The engine is a later A+ unit (the extra ribbing on the outside of the block is a giveaway), so the engine is definitely not original. Probably a 1275cc unit from a mini or metro. They are good engines, but not powerful unless it has been ugraded internally. A change of head, pistons and cam will soon unleash a few more bhp.
