Stored 20 Years: 1984 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler

This 1984 Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler doesn’t look anything like a pickup in this opening photo, but that’s what Jeep had in mind when they lengthened the CJ-7 a couple of feet in order to add to their pickup models. This one can be found here on eBay in Glenside, Pennsylvania with bids reaching over $10,000 and there is only a day left to get in on this one.

Known as one of the first if not the first small 4×4 pickup in the US – at least in Jeep’s marketing material – the Scrambler is maybe not a pickup-pickup as we’ve come to know pickups but more of an extended cargo area on a regular Jeep CJ-7 on which it was originally based. From the front, you’d never know that there was almost an extra foot of room behind the seats for storage.

Here’s where the extra length is and this Scrambler really looks good. The seller says that it’s been parked in a garage for 20 years and has hardly any rust, but there is some peeking out here and there.

The interior looks good overall but parts of it will need work, or it will if the next owner is interested in restoring this one back to like-new condition. They say that the floor pans were replaced at some point but they weren’t welded, they were screwed down and they also mention some paintwork that wasn’t completed too well. Frankly, I’m surprised at the high bids on this one. Hagerty is at $15,500 for a #3 good condition example and it seems like there’s quite a bit of work to do to bring it back up to that level.

And, that doesn’t take into account deferred maintenance work from sitting for 20 years, including all of the rubber bits and gaskets and bushings and tires and brakes, etc., etc…  The engine is AMC’s 258 cubic-inch inline-six with around 110 hp and they say that it runs. How much would you pay for this Scrambler given the work that it needs and the current value?

Great Jeep!! There wasn’t a lot of these around!! They were a little longer then the classic CJ!! I looked at the e-bay ad and the pictures and it’s real hard to tell if this is a standard or automatic!!! It sure would be nice to know for sure!!!

The description section lists the transmission as manual.

Too bad it is not a regular CJ. These are just too long. Lots of money for one that needs to be overhauled. Best of luck to the new owner.

This is a solid find. I have never fully understood the prices associated with the CJ 8 over any other model but their following has remained strong. I recently sold a 66 CJ 6 I had for 26 years and immediately regretted it. The 6 was quite a bit smaller than the 8 and worked great up here in the North Woods of Washington State. This will make its new owner a great vehicle and I wish them all the best.

Nice CJ, but you better look it over well before laying out any foldin money. It may have still seen fifteen Pennsylvania winters.
