Survivor Drop Top: 1966 Mustang Convertible

left

This is a one owner low miles (85,000) original rust free original California car with a BIN of $15,000. It’s been parked since 1996. It’s listed here on eBay right here in Sacramento. The price might be a little high, but this car could well be a preserved survivor. It would be even nicer if it was a four speed, of course, but it still is a great barn find! It was running when parked, so it will need a top, interior, chrome and the usual mechanicals of course.

in the shed

Here it is as found in the shed. There are, or were, a number of other interesting cars on the property.

under

The underside and rockers do indeed appear to be rust free. It could use a good bath to get rid of all the cobwebs.

right close

The body looks straight even up close and it looks like it could be original paint.

left front

There’s no visible rust or damage anywhere. New old stock wheels and hubcaps are available.

left rear

Perhaps I’ll go have a look at this tomorrow for a friend who’s interested. One could do the mechanical work necessary and drive it with the top down until you had money for a top. In a few steps you could have a really nice car. Perhaps this once, could 15K not be too far over a reasonable price for this car?

The VIN shows it to be a 6 cylinder car. I wonder if it has 4 bolt wheels. Also notice it has no V8 emblems on the front fenders. Still a nice project car.

    If it’s a true V8 car, it’s a super great deal !!

I had a 66 convertible.. all black inside and out.. Black top and a 6 cyl with a 3 spd stick on the floor.. If I had only known…
This is a great find and a great car.. If I didn’t already have 3 projects going, I’d cash in on this one..
    Very nice find.

Six cylinder mechanicals, No way! 4 lug wheels, small Falcon brakes, and a Dagenham light duty 4 speed.

$15K plus what you would have to put in the car to make it driveable, you’re talking easily $8-10K=$25K+! $$7-$8K would be big money for the car in this condition. PASS!

I noticed it has a trailer hitch. I wonder what trailer he pulled with a six? I had a ’65 six and pulled a 16 ft camper, now the six really had to work !!

Like Jim says, if it was a v8 it would probably be worth it, but deduct 20% for the six. by OLD CARS PRICE GUIDE

There is a picture of a V-8 engine sitting in the engine bay. 289 according to the Ebay info sheet. Love the bumper hitch

Nice cruiser, but there is some surface rust, normal for any car not kept in a climate controlled environment. For not running so many years the engine should be pulled apart, carb rebuilt, tank and fuel lines cleaned out, change all fluids, possibly tires if over five years old and brakes. Oh, new top too. I wouldn’t touch much of the interior except clean and use something to protect the dash and seats.

I noticed a 5 bolt styled wheel in the album, so maybe they have been converted, hopefully the brakes too. But a T code v8? Buyer beware and know your Mustangs.!

Thanks for the share David. Nice car, but $13k and climbing is a bit steep for that car. Entire interior redo, top, engine, trans and brakes would have to be gone through. Car most likely began life as I6 (based on badging) – they still had 5 lugs, but with smaller 8-inch rear and weaker front spindles that like to collapse after a while with V8 weight – buyer beware. Sitting in dirt floored storage, would be concerned about undercarriage – hard to tell from photos. You’d be above value once completed with work needed. I would love to have an early convertible for the wife to go along with my fastback though.

The car looks straight and rust free in the pictures.

    I had a ’67 with a hitch, I pulled a three-rail motorcycle trailer with our dirt-bikes on it…

I didn’t realize that there was a sun roof option with the convertible.
