When you write for a site like Barn Finds, you start to notice how you see certain cars over and over again. This is not a bad thing, as it gives some indication as to the pulse of the collector car market. The Chevy Caprice / Buick Roadmaster / Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser contingent are well documented in terms of their appeal to enthusiasts and families alike, but it’s truly amazing how many turn up for sale and find new owners each week – that kind of staying power is impressive for a car that isn’t that old at this point. This 1991 Buick Roadmaster is listed here on eBay with no reserve and bidding to $3,500 at the moment.
Of course, you can buy one of these estate wagons pretty cheaply assuming mileage and condition are average. This one has a tick under 120,000 miles and looks it from the outside; it could stand to be detailed for some more eyeball appeal. But the woodgrain is holding up and white paint is very forgiving, so I doubt you’d be ashamed to be seen in it. The acres of glass all look quite clear and the seller cites the clean Carfax as evidence of zero accidents requiring major bodywork. Whitewall tires are a must-have for a wagon like this, especially if you plan to shame your kids into driving it to high school some day.
There’s actually an ad on TV right now – I believe for an insurance company – whereby that exact scene unfolds, with the parents giving the kid a clearly neglected Caprice wagon as a first car. The kid’s facial expression indicates extreme disappointment, but that young man is just uninformed. With the third row of seats, you can bring tons of friends along for the ride, all while enjoying the sound of an LT1 V8 under the hood. If it were me, however, I’d want the wagon to make it easier to haul junkyard parts home from the wreckers, as flipping down that rear bench makes hauling moldy Recaros and rust-free body panels way easier.
Despite the average miles, the interior looks quite tidy, with the front bench showing very little in the way of wear and tear. The dash pad isn’t cracked (they normally aren’t), and the carpets look clean. Aside from the steering wheel showing some wear, the interior may be the wagon’s best feature as it looks far fresher than the mileage would otherwise indicate. The seller mentions that the Roadmaster will come with all manuals and the original window sticker, another tidbit that may indicate the prior owner was a stickler for the details. For the money, you really can’t go wrong if you can use the added utility of a wagon in your life – which is probably why these sell reliably on eBay.
Horrible news fellow Finders. According to the Monroe label pictured on the dealers website this beautiful elephant is saddled with the TBI 5.0 liter v8. Still a stunning vehicle. Should make a good driver, but you won’t be towing or hauling at very elevated speeds. 😢
Yeah. LT-1 was only available on the 1994-96 models.
Jeff, Seller says it has the 5.0
For an old vehicle and ease of repair I’ll take the TBI L05 over the LT1. These big RMW, OCC and Caprice Wagons are not gonna be performance cars with either engine.
An LS/1 would easily change that!
Could that green carpet have been original?
I think what you’re seeing there is the extremely dark tint of the roof windows.
Friend of mine has one of these ’91 Roadmaster wagons with the 305 V8, and has just turned 250,000 miles on the original engine which has never needed any serious repairs.
Wife and I had a 96 with the LT-1 motor. Four kids and a dog and that thing would dust just about anything off the line. Probably the most comfortable car I have ever driven and I have owned quite a few. Yes we had to constantly re glue various bits of trim on an almost daily basis but it was an amazing car. Only problem was flats. I tried every configuration and ply and nothing was reliable except having two spares ready to go and a shop jack in the back for when mom got a flat (weekly) on a dirt road stretch near home. Like so may others we dubbed the Road Monster and it brings back many happy memories. Don’t knock them till you have used one. The ultimate F you mobile.
I think Beige Betty is a Buick.
Yes. A 1993 Buick Roadmaster Wagon.
