Someone really should make land yachting an official sport, it would be a bit like competitive sailing, especially if everyone had to drive a convertible like this ’76 Cadillac Eldorado. Like competitive sailing there’s still the risk of getting wet, you might go overboard (literally and figuratively), and by the end of a full day of racing your arms will be exhausted from turning the massive steering wheel. I think we are onto something here! If you see yourself being a future land yachting pro or just like big comfortable cruisers, it might be worth bidding on this Cadillac here on BringATrailer.
I can almost smell the leather from here! You have to give Cadillac credit, they didn’t skimp on the luxury in this massive convertible. The white leather seats look to have held up well, although it looks like they could benefit from a good cleaning and conditioning. You’ll want to be careful with the leather conditioner though, you don’t want the seats to be slippery when you set sail. I can’t help but wonder how much of the seat upholstery is real leather and how much is actually vinyl?
Hammering out the rules for professional land yachting is going to be a challenge. Do we put cars in various classes based on engine or fuel tank size? This 500 cui V8 might be powerful, but it has a serious thirst for fuel. Perhaps give weight handicaps for tanks size and range? We can work out the details later. What’s important right now is that this beast runs and drives well. The seller recently installed a few new parts to make it a driver and has put a few miles on it over the past 6 months.
I’m doubtful we will ever see professional land yachting in the Olympics, but you can’t blame me for dreaming. Honestly, it’s a sport I’d be interested in, I might actually be competitive! With bidding at $5,500, this Cadillac seems like a relative bargain, even if land yachting isn’t a sport. It’s located in Anderson, California and is going to need the regular things, like body filler panels, but is otherwise ready to be driven. So, who’s with me on making land yachting an Olympic sport?

It is already 5 times over what it is worth intis condition. No thanks.
This ain’t the 80’s Miguel, Hagerty Says 11,800 for #4 Fair.

If you can find them for under a grand please send em my way we could make a lotta money together. Its 2018 Man!
My grandfather had one of these with the horns on the hood.lol
Your grandfather was Boss Hogg???
I cant wait to see the size of the sail that you’d need to move a land yacht like this!
The sail is one of the biggest ever put in a passenger car, and it is under that massive hood.
Since I am older now and have a hurt arm, I know I could never lift that hood to even check the oil.
It was difficult when i was a young man with all the strength in the world.
Always loved those huuuuge early to mid seventies Eldo’s. Aircraft carrier sized hood, floating down the highway like, as you put it, a land yacht and all done in style and eligance. Sign me up.
I thought BF was a competitor to BaT. Almost once a week BF posts a car way before BaT puts it on their website. Very rarely is it the other way around. Besides, BaT clogs up their website with their auctions while BF keeps to just finding well, barn finds.
I used to really like and follow Bring-A-Trailer but can offer documented proof that ol’ Randy sold out his principles in pursuit of even more auction commission dollars – he will kick you off B.A.T. for pointing out something objectively fraudulent that bidders should be aware of, so now all I can say to him is “chinga trailer!”
Best thing about Barnfinds is the memories it evokes. In 1985 I was learning to drive and passed my test on my grandmother’s third gen skylark. At the time I was living with my divorced father. He had a 1978 F150 with a stick and a recently acquired gold (paint code Buckskin Firemist if I recall correctly) 1977 Eldorado that if it wasn’t mint it was close.
He needed the truck for work and there was no way he was going to let me smoke that clutch so I had full access to the caddy. All this back in the day when there was no correlation between seat belts and allowable passengers. Good times…
Drove my uncles to Fl when in collage in 79 was so much fun gas was cheep and the ride fantastic
I just sold a much nicer 1970 Deville Convertible for $5500, had it 20 years, it was time for Body, interior and paint, on a car of this size and complexity that’s about $15-20K. This Eldorado is a nightmare
Ron for 5500 you gave that car away. This eldo aside from needing fillers which most need and are admittedly costly doesn’t look that bad. If it were closer and I didn’t already have 7 other Cadillacs, I’d consider it.
The power steering made driving them effortless. Unless of course your beat up caddy had a leaking pump and ran dry, or you lost power when the electrical system went out when you’re driving on a twisty two lane through the Endless Mountains heading into a turn at midnight… Fun times!
I had to laugh when I read the comment about not using too much leather conditioner. I had a number of Caddys when I was younger. The first one I had with leather was a 1 of 10 ’72 Eldorado with a bench seat. One of my friends told me about Lexol and insisted I buy some. The first time I tried to get in the car after I used it I slid almost all the way across the front seat. It was a good thing I always wear my seat belt. Every corner was a challenge to stay put.
I’m in! what exactly is the sport of Land Yachting though?
Love this land yacht…worth restoring. That being said…gimme the 72-73 version. More HP…slightly sleeker profile…no plastic filler caps.
I’d put a pair of horns on the hood and drive around in a white suit!
Okay, you know that events begin when someone has a vision! Maybe you should start the land yacht cursing club! You might be surprised in the interest! Just sayin!
Hot dry summers. That’s Anderson, California. Run your A/C even with the top down. This old Caddy is perfect for driving I-5 from nearby Redding to Sacramento and back. Mountains to the west, north and east within a 50 mile radius if you want some cooler weather. Just imagine yourself cruising in this Eldo all cleaned up with the top down. You talk about a land yaught who needs a sail with 500 cubes under the hood. I’ve almost talked myself into going for this one. Dream on man dream on.
Am I the only person who thinks of Boss Hogg & The 2x Enos’s from Smokey & The Bandit with this vehicle?
