Rare Color: 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1968 Dodge Charger is one of approximately 250 true R/T painted in its correct factory silver.  The Charger is located in Stafford Springs, Connecticut and is listed for sale here on eBay. The reserve has not been met even though the bids have reached $68,300. There are 7 days remaining in the auction so maybe the bids will increase but I don’t know what the market value of such a nice Charger R/T is or what it will brings these days. This car represents the first year of the second generation of the Charger which spanned from 1968-1970.

The car is equipped with its numbers matching 440 cubic inch V8 engine backed by a 4 speed transmission. The seller states that the Charger just underwent an extensive restoration but still needs a few things fixed. The owner has driven the car about 2,000 miles since the restoration  and states that it is in excellent shape. The ad states that the engine puts out 440 horsepower which is higher than the stock 426 Hemi factory rating. I would think that due to its rarity this car would be sought after by investors and Mopar enthusiasts. Quarter mile times for the stock 440 equipped Charger were in the low 14 second range.

The interior looks nice with no obviously blemishes but there are not a lot of pictures of the seats, dash, back seat, headliner, etc. The seller states that the Charger is registered in his name but that the State of Connecticut does not issue titles on cars older than 20 years old.  Therefore, the sale of the car will convey with a registration and presumably a bill of sale.

Overall, the silver paint looks gorgeous on this body style. The VIN is XS29L8B166031. The data tag is not provided in the pictures in the ad. Over 96,100 Chargers were built in 1968 and approximately 17,000 were optioned with the R/T package. I am not sure how long the restoration took but hopefully this car gets out on the road soon.

I wonder which of these 3 subjects will have the most comments:
    “68 – 70 Charger R/Ts are overpriced”
    “No Title, No Sale”
    “No numbers matching drivetrain”

I think the “HP” in the ad “440HP” stands for “High Performance”.

A trak pak car needs a little more identification and the ability to enlarge the photos on EBay…..which cost is like nothing.

I had a 68′ 4spd/H code Silver metallic. Paid $250 for it back in 1985. One of @212. Got illegally towed by the same Tow company (Pinks/Metro) I bought it from 2yrs later. They wanted $1000 to get it back. Being 20 and unemployed, they kept it. Miss that car.

Be cautious of disparaging a car when the issue is because of a bad state policy.

Four years ago I relocated my 5 cars down to South Carolina ( a title state) from Connecticut ( a non-title state). Fortunately I had saved the old title from each car when I had purchssed them years earlier. SC took all those titles in order to give me new ones.

Yes it would have been possible but much more difficult to title them here without that documentation. That goes for every non title state.

I live in a non-title state for cars 15 yrs and older (ME)….I needed a replacement title for one that was lost…..I got one from the state in less than 2 wks for 30 bucks…..Anyone without one thats moving to title state might want to check that out with their state before they move….

Amen brother, best Chargers ever. 68 is, imho, the best year with the round taillights and smooth grille. I’ve owned them all but 68 is my favorite year

I do agree with that, because 68 chargers are the most unique of the 2nd gen. I myself prefer the ’70 though.

Yeah 68 to 70 Chargers are overpriced, but if people pay, oh well. 68 to 69 are my favorite. Should have bought one in 79 when they affordable. But was a broke college kid driving a 68 Satellite I paid $600 for from original owner.

A buddy had a 383 4speed 69 RoadRunner back in the early 80’s in silver with a black bucket seat interior, magnums and w o tires. It was a low mileage, all original car. It was a beautiful color combo, smooth and classy.
