Two Sided Pony: 1966 Mustang Convertible

c1

Based on this first picture, this is a pretty good looking project, from it’s cool color to it’s original wheel covers. But in the same way that there’s two sides to every coin, there are two sides to this Mustang. It’s located in Temperance, Michigan and is up for sale here on eBay, with bidding just over $1,000.

c2

Unfortunately, the Mustang has this side, too. As you can see, there’s a lot of corrosion! Thankfully, the seller has included some new sheet metal as well.

c4

Yes, it has an inside as well. Or what’s left of it! Looks like floors are needed as well.

Here’s that sheet metal. The seller talks about it being a good father/son project–I think it could be a father/daughter project too!

c5

With a 289 V8 and a four speed (no idea if they are original or not, but hey, they’re present!) this could certainly be a fun driver. What worries me the most is that if there’s this much rust showing in the sheet metal, what rust is there underneath that isn’t shown in the pictures we see? The seller does tell us it runs and drives but needs brake work to be safe. I think some underneath shots would be nice! Would you like to look further at this pony?

The color which was used on less than 5% of Mustangs is called Emberglo.
It was often combined with a Pony Interior in Parchment.

Awesome! But I have to admit, given your user name, I’m surprised that you have Pony love!

Now that one obviously needs those floor pans. :)

Definitely a Father/Daughter project as my daughter knows more about vehicles than my two sons put together (she was always in the garage with me when they were playing video games). With tons of parts availability this ‘vert could be easily put back on the road in short order.

My daughter helped as well with her 66 Mustang which was her first car. She used it in her wedding and will probably always keep it. Watch out! They are guy magnets. A fact that my younger daughter figured out too late. lol

What’s left under there to rust? Obviously the right front torquebox is gone. Not just rusty, but gone. Looking right at the ground in the area where it should have been…

“It has the usual rust issues but not that bad.”
    ———————————————
Now ron, are you saying that a missing torque box is all that bad!? And just because you can see daylight through all 4 footwells…?

But seriously, I think this car will be saved despite being a rust belt car with daylight showing through because of the availability of repro parts and because of what it is. But I hope the right person steps up who knows it needs a rotisserie rebuild and work in the cowl area, then the work on the rest of the body that you see when it’s all done and sitting in the driveway. Add in a windshield and lots of repro parts, time and effort……

It needs the right person, because anyone who underestimates all that work will just be selling it again on Ebay or CL, and it might be partly disassembled by then and have to sell even cheaper.

I would be that right person if the price was right. Just did one that was in about the same condition. You’d never know it by the way it looks now.

Better pick this one up while you can. Prices are dropping but like a 911 not going to stay there. I have both and bought them new. The Porsche with 60k and a targa the Mustand a 65 K series convertible. Not looking to get rich but hey if you can’t leave something for your kids to fight over what kind of parent could you call yourself?

I’d guess it may bring near 5K as it sits.

Robert, I’d love to have the K code convertible…I have a D code 4 speed convert which will go the son’s college fund when needed.

You’re right, Dolphin. With the repops, time, and money it will/should be restored. But let’s not let anybody be fooled that this is easily restorable. My experience is that when the torque boxes are gone, rear rails will be mostly missing also. As well as front rails under the shock towers. This won’t be a father son/daughter ‘project’. It will be a major undertaking for even a professional. Still a very neat and attractive car for somebody!

Aren’t they making complete new bodies for early mustangs? Convertible and fastback styles? Seems like one of those is appropriate here if you can re-body this legally.

Too many Rustangs, too little care. There’s three at every cruise in.
