Tri-Five Alternative: 1957 Pontiac Star Chief

starchief

This 1957 Pontiac Star Chief has just been rescued from being in storage since 1971. While it was parked on a cement pad, it was only covered up with car covers and tarps. It’s located in Emeryville, California and is up for sale here on eBay, with an buy-it-now of $5,000 and best offers invited. Thanks to Dan H. for this great find! According to the seller, the car has a clear title and rolls easily, but doesn’t run. There’s certainly some rust, with the worst of it being in the trunk at the rear, but there’s plenty of floor perforation to go around too. What is nice is that you would have something different from all the tri-five Chevrolets running around. For those who care, the car is also still wearing its California black plate in the rear. So, would you be interested in this tri-five alternative?

With all the rust on this (did you see the engine bay?) I have a hard time seeing this being worth 5k. I do admire the use of electrical tape to hold the light bezel on though, lol.

These are great cars, I drove a 55 for many years. Far superior in every way to the common Chevrolet product. The hydromatic transmission was one of the best for another decade, the longer wheelbase had a far superior ride and the engine was the basis for the great Pontiac performance engines to come in the next decade. The interior in mine was all chrome and leather with wool carpets. When I talk to my buddies from the time I had it, they all want to know where it went. Like many things in life, I didn’t realize how special it really was.

the seller admits that it needs a lot of work, from what I can see is the floorboards, and a new interior unknown about the engine.. drop a modern 350 in it I have seen ’57 Chevs in worse shape going for more . I like this better than the Chev.

From what I remember about these cars from family members who owned used 50 cars that the BOP brands were mid sized up scale cars over the Chevy brand but not as much luxury and cost as the Caddy line. I never owned one as I didn’t even get my license until 1969.

Pontiacs used similar body tubs as the Chevys, Chieftans had the same wheelbase as the Chevies, Star Chiefs had a longer wheelbase. Buick, Olds and Cadaliacs were more likely to have similar body tubs that were different than the Chevies.

Back in the early 1970, my older brother purchased a 57 Pontiac Super Chief 4 door from a friend. The car was a tank. It was black with a white roof, yards of chrome and big white walls .It ran like a top…I loved being picked up from elementary school in that beast..
… but when OPEC applied the thumb screws, he decided to replace it with a more fuel efficient ride…. a mid 60’s Buick Wildcat 2dr w/ a fuel stingy 455..

    How’s that for logic..

Krash , Sounds about the right logic for those good old days in the 70’s. Just think if you could go back there now, all those cool musclecars you could stockpile for your future retirement.

I want tis so bad, but I have a ’57 Chevy 210 to finish first. Once that’s done I’ll look at applying my skills to one of these (or a wagon).

Just imagine (if the sorry is true) how good the thing was when it was parked in 1971 – how many times have we seen this?
