Two-Owner Survivor: 1982 Honda Civic DX

We’ve seen our share of Honda Civics here in the last year or two. Maybe it’s because they’re finally becoming old enough to be shown here. Or, their owners are old enough to be selling them and the market is flooding with Civics. Whatever the reason, this two-owner 1982 Honda Civic DX is listed on eBay with one bid of $3,000 and there are four days left on the auction. It’s located in beautiful Johns Island, South Carolina and yes, the seller says that you can drive this one home.

That South Carolina heat and sun has worked its magic on the paint, or at least on the top of the hood. This car has always been in South Carolina, first in Anderson with the original owner until February of 2015 and then in Johns Island with the current owner. The seller says that the body “and undercarriage is solid and not rusted or in need of repair.” It sure looks nice, other than that peeling clear coat.

The second-generation Civics were a little crisper than the first-generation cars were. They were arguably better, more-refined cars, but I don’t know if that makes them more desirable or more collectible.

Yeah, there’s that automatic transmission! These small cars beg for manual transmissions to wring out every ounce of fun, and they are fun cars to drive. In a different way than you drive your Chevelle / Cuda / Mustang, though. The interior looks very nice on this car, in my opinion. Well, other than in the hatchback area. The two-tone seats are pretty fancy for a Honda Civic, but this is a DX model. The back seat looks like it may have never been used.

This is Honda’s 1,500cc inline-four, a more powerful engine, relatively, than the 1,300cc four and it had just under 80 hp. The seller says that this car has “102,000 miles on it (Has been a daily driver), Automatic transmission, Factory Air Conditioner, No engine leaks, Excellent running condition (This car can be driven from here to you with no issues).” This looks like a nice little survivor that could be used as a daily driver if a person doesn’t have to commute with hulking SUVs.

Hey Scotty G, I totally agree that it really hurts to see that this nice little hatchback is an automatic. Please pass the Kleenex … Again.

Not having a manual transmission saved it. Otherwise it would be in primer now, slammed to the ground, huge fart-can muffler and a stereo more powerful than the engine.
I don’t mind the Automatic at all.

I broke a power pole with one of these,I got out between the window frame and the roof. The alternator was in the footwell!
I ran away because the cops were chasing me but I still ran!
Seatbelt saved my life and my chest was pretty sore but no hospital visit!
Not my proudest moment but I turned into a respectable member of society with no criminal record…
Police caught me at home and couldn’t prove I was drinking and they weren’t close enough to call it evading.
Officer told me they were looking for a body.
Like I said lesson learned BTW telephone poles were $3300 in 1994….

This car is very, very brown, inside and out.

This would make a great base for a tastefully done hot-rod.

Jimmy J at least you had enough brains back in 94′ to at least wear a seat belt.
In 1983 I tried an “experiment” by wearing my seat belt at all times for a month just to see if I could do it. A week later came onto the freeway off ramp at 70 mph and spun from a oil patch laid down by a broken oil line from a diesel concrete truck. I did a 180 and then hit the foot high curb and rolled my mint Toyota SR-5 longbed truck. My head hurt from the cab hitting it. An hour later with some help got the truck running and drove it home crushed from the accident. My Experiment was complete after that moment

It seems all the ones that make it on here are the slush boxes. If I see a 5 speed I’m biddin’ !

always liked the first or second generation Honda, clean and simple before the 21st century bloat arrived.

Had one from 1980 for seven years roughly from 1987-1993. 1300cc, 5 speed and metallic gold.

These rust super easy. I took mine into pieces and back together twice in seven years I had it. With it I learned to weld, sandblast, changed gearbox (3 times), applied lead to rear hatch window corners after welding, replaced sills, painted the car twice, etc etc. Fun to drive and economical hence drove about 200k with it

    Thanks RHB-610. Good times.
