Ultimate Shorty: 1987 Chevrolet C/10

There’s no doubt short-bed, two-wheel drive Chevy C/10 pickups are a hot commodity right now, both for hot rod shops that want to build the next show truck and purists who simply want to keep one of the most attractive Chevy pickups from being cut up for entertainment purposes. This 1987 model has all the right stuff, featuring a perfect stance, the preferred short bed, a 350 under the hood, rear wheel drive, and more. Find it here on eBay with bidding at $7K with no reserve.

The condition looks decent, with some rough paint around the perimeter of the bed and what I believe is a non-factory rear bumper. The trim panel on the tailgate has become a desirable bit of kit in good condition, and the seller notes that the tailgate and right-side door were both painted at one point in time. This truck was also optioned with dual tanks from the factory.

The interior presents well, certainly fitting of a truck with claimed mileage of under 60,000 from new. The cardinal red interior was al the rage for GM products in the 80s and early 90s, and the cabin even features a color-coordinating dash panel cover. The seller notes the A/C is still cold and even the factory clock still works. It will be sold with a clean Arkansas title.

I’m sure this C/10 will find a new owner given how much people love the RWD “shortys.” The engine bay is clean, with a fuel-injected 350 under the hood paired to an automatic transmission with overdrive. The original jack, floormats, bedrails and owner’s manual/booklets will remain with the truck, which is strong enough to “fly in and drive home,” according to the listing.

Well, we’ve correctly identified this as a “C”. Now what is it about the tailgate panel being part of a kit? Is it part of an appearance package?

That came with the upscale interior package.

Oh gotcha. Thanks! I’ve seen them, but don’t know what kit he’s referring to.

He didn’t actually say it was from a kit.

He said “The trim panel on the tailgate has become a desirable bit of kit in good condition”

Bit of kit is the English way of saying parts.

When you say this was the ultimate shorty, you mean in the US market only.

We had them in Mexico until 1991 in this configuration.

The new trucks didn’t come out until 1992 in Mexico.

Good write up. It looks like someone is going to get themselves a nice, new to them, truck at the end of this auction.

Hot commodity? Well, we’ll see when it comes to selling mine. I think there will always be a market for real clean ones like this, but so-so ones like mine, I’ll be lucky to get $2 grand, and I’d take it.

This Chevy short bed pickup really has a lot going for it; apparently rust-free, low mileage and well optioned. The rear bumper, while not stock, looks good. The 350 should give it decent performance, too. The only thing I’ve never cared for is the stacked, square headlights. Not the best look in my opinion but overall this is a very attractive pickup. Should bring good money at auction’s end, how much will be interesting to see.

As far as the “ultimate shorty,” wouldn’t that be a short bed pickup with a stick shift and not an auto trans?

Agreed! I have a short bed 4 speed manual Power Wagon and of the 30 or so trucks I’ve owned it gets the most attention.

Great winter beater, should get a couple of years out of it before the roads department destroys it with salt.!!! Morley

At least in the USA, this was the last of the square Chevy trucks and the first year for the TBI 350, which had some snap to it. My ’87 was a long bed as I used it for construction work, but the short beds look cool. With the right gears and 700R auto these are fairly quick, playing with the exhaust and air intake seemed to make a lot of wonderful noise more so than power, leg room was limited, power steering was very light, stiff accelerator pedal in mine even with a new throttle cable. Absolutely lost my cool when someone stole it in the middle of the afternoon!!!

Cool truck for sure. I haven’t seen very many of this color combo… I’m on the east coast, white one’s that I have saw/owned have had either tan or blue interior. I’ve definitely seen of bunch, worked on countless number of them,an have owned 5, still have one for a beater.lol

Nice truck, but in my eyes, the ultimate shorty would be about 10 years older with a 454 under the hood.

My dad had an 82 Chevy truck with an 8 foot bed and it had the 6.2L diesel. It also had the dual stacked headlights. It had red and silver paint with dual inline cherry bomb exhaust. I would never own a short bed truck. If I had to get this truck I would have to do a lot of work to change a few things to make it what I wanted.
