Vintage Camping Accessory: 1965 Snyder Hi-Lo Camper

In an era where owning an RV has suddenly taken on new meaning, it’s no surprise that vintage camping accessories continue to attract decent attention and money on auction sites and classifieds pages. The 1965 Snyder Hi-Lo Camper seen here being towed behind an original Ford Bronco gives you an idea as to how cool this clever camper would look being towed behind the vintage 4×4 of your choice. The seller notes that both functionally and cosmetically, it remains in excellent condition. He purchased it from the original owners, who clearly cherished it, as it was stored indoors when not in use and there’s no signs of leaks that usually stem from prolonged neglect. Find it here on eBay with bids to $3,550 and no reserve.

The basic concept is pretty simple: with what the seller describes as being 35 “effortless” turns of a handle, you can raise and lower the height of the camper for towing purposes or for when you reach a destination and need to create sleeping or dining quarters. Not only that, it only takes 30 seconds to raise or lower it. While it doesn’t look particularly novel from here, it’s a great concept if you’re interested in conserving space whenever possible when it comes time to store your tow-behind camper. Cosmetically, it looks quite sound, with the seller noting some cosmetic flaws here and there, but nothing major.

There’s the full assortment of off-the-grid gear you need to live comfortably in this tiny trailer, including a stove, sink, furnace, icebox fridge, and a solitary 110 volt light. All of the typically fragile surfaces and wood paneling look to be in good shape here, which typically isn’t possible when there’s a leaky roof; fortunately, the seller claims the roof is sound, along with the floors. Functionally, the seller has not lit the stove or the furnace, so he cannot attest to their operating condition. Regardless, starting with equipment that appears to be in excellent condition is the first step, as replacing rotten wood and filthy appliances is no one’s idea of a good time.

There’s a booth-style sitting area with a table that converts into the sleeping quarters you see here, yet another smart use of space and testament to the ingenious abilities of designers of these tow-behind campers to find space for seemingly everything you need in a very compact footprint. Again, materials looks to be in excellent condition with no signs of major wear and tear. The seller notes the tires to be in good shape and that he replaced the light wiring while performing a general inspection that concluded the brakes were in good condition and that the wheel bearings needed re-greasing, which he completed prior to listing it for sale. A very cool rig that presents a very big question: what would your preferred towing rig be?

Got more camping stuff than we need but that’s what a first generation Bronco should look like. Purists need not apply. Wow!

Well if I were a younger and still interested in outdoor events this would be the ticket.

The first picture on eBay shows the “facilities”: a portable seat to which you attach plastic bags. Remember using one of those back when I was a kid and my parents had a camper with no facilities. Oh what memories.

    nice size!
I’d try’n fit a 15 inch wheel on it to “back 40” it (behind nother bronk) as at my age – sleep on the grnd is tough.
    And “Yes”
both frnt/rear fenders and grill are customised on the bronk. + I think only the ’77 had body colored top.

Easy to pull, can store plenty of extra stuff in it when down, room enough to sleep and eat when you arrive at your destination, what more do you need!!!
