Went Fast: 1923 Model T Dragster

23T Street Roadster drag car front left

A barn find according to the owner, this dragster once raced at Lions Dragstrip in Long Beach, at Colton Drag Strip, Riverside Raceway for the HotRod Magazine Race in ’69 & ’70 and at the Winternationals at Pomona in 1970. It is currently parked in Yucaipa, California and is listed here on eBay with a BIN of $7,500.

23T Street Roadster drag car, engine

There is a ’52 Buick Roadmaster straight 8 with a 3 speed transmission, Jahns pistons, the cam is unknown, the head is ported and polished with a DuCoil distributor. The engine has been dis-assembled, oiled down inside with the rings removed and then reassembled. It is not ready to run as there is some surface rust on the cylinder walls and the crank journals. The seller states the engine just needs to be cleaned up. Is a rebuild in order or is a different engine going to be dropped in?

The wheels are stock steel wheels with Casler slicks on the rear, although they will definitely need to be replaced.

This car was built in 1967 and raced for 4 years. It still wears a sticker or two from it’s racing days.

23T Street Roadster drag car, spares

Included in this package is a spare engine, a special engine stand for the straight 8, a spare Hilborn injector butterfly body, pump, barrel valve, an incomplete intake manifold, a spare racing cam, spare block, head pan, crank, a spare hi-performance cam and a few other items. The owner says that there is some rust and wear on the body, but as long as there aren’t any holes, we would leave it looking rough (it just adds to the intimidation factor. This looks to be a project with some good racing history.  Will she go fast again? We hope so!

Motor-on,
Robert

    Jesse / Moderator,

I have a suggestion, why not have a short follow up on each Barn Find with the final selling price?

It would be nice to see the outcome or where these end up!

I agree with Joe- maybe a nice email to the seller after the sale would get the sale price (of course, some wouldn’t want to share it). But after a while, you would have a database of real world values that would be a lot more useful than some of the online valuation services based on pie in the sky auction results.

How on earth are you going to compile meaningful statistics for cars such as this? Each one so unique, with unique history, construction and condition that it’s pretty hard, if not impossible to find a comparable with a verified sales price. Sports Car Market does this but for various reasons I won’t go into, I think their data is oft-times suspect.
