Wrong Nose Job: 1980 Pontiac Trans Am

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1980 Pontiac Trans Am has not been on the road since 1996. Pontiac enthusiasts will immediately recognize that this car has a 1977 – 1978 nose on the car which many think is an upgrade. The seller bought this car 4 years ago to create a restomod with a LS swap. However, plans and life changes so they are parting with the car. It is listed here on eBay with a Buy It Now Price of $6,998 and an option to Make An Offer. The Trans Am is located in Holyoke, Massachusetts and there are 27 days remaining in the listing.

The 1980 Trans Am came standard with a naturally aspirated 155 horsepower 301 cubic inch V8 engine. The two engine options were a 150 horsepower Chevrolet 305 cubic inch V8 or a 210 horsepower turbocharged 301 cubic inch V8 engine. All three engines were backed by an automatic transmission and there was not an option for a 4 speed Trans Am for the first time in the 11 year production history of the Trans Am. The seller states that a NOM 350 cubic inch block resides under the hood. The engine has no heads or intake and has been exposed to the elements so it is probably not rebuildable. Also, the car has no title and will be sold on a Bill of Sale with a Vermont registration.

The dash is said to be mint but there is a depression in the center of the dash pad. There are no pictures of the seats, carpet or headliner. The car appears to have been originally equipped with air conditioning, rear defrost and factory T-Tops. The wheel flares and hood scoop are missing but are located in the trunk of the car. The wheels are said to be original 15×7 aluminum snowflake wheels. This would indicate the car was not originally built with the WS6 handling package.

On the negative side, the car has a lot of rust. The seller’s pictures indicate rot and bubbling in the rear quarters, lower doors,  and driver side rocker panel. The gold paint is faded and flaking and the car will need a complete restoration of the drivetrain, brakes, body and interior. If you are looking for a hands on project, this might be a good candidate and the seller may be negotiable on the price.

Wow! This Trans Am certainly does have it’s share of rust although repairable. I just question with it having a NOM and needing a complete restoration, if it would be worth the expenditure involved. I would say yes if the Buyer could do the mechanical, sheetmetal repair and painting of the car.

The only “enthusiasts” who think that nose job is an upgrade reside in the nearest asylum for the criminally insane. Plain hideous.

Correct. Although the 77-78 model nose is far preferable to the 79-81 for most TA enthusiasts, nobody wants a Frankenbird.
