1-of-1? 1980 Porsche 911 Targa SCR by RUF

Rarity claims can sometimes prove challenging to confirm, especially when the vehicle in question is the product of a third-party tuning house. However, potential buyers may be able to obtain evidence that this 1980 Porsche 911 is the only Targa version to be upgraded to SCR specifications by legendary specialists RUF. It presents extremely well as a survivor-grade classic, and if its unique status is confirmed, will stand out above standard examples. The only thing it needs is a new home, and although it isn’t cheap, it is undoubtedly worth a close look.

RUF commenced operations in 1939 as a simple Service Garage. It began turning its attention to restoring Porsches in around 1960, producing its first RUF-enhanced model in 1975. The 911 SCR joined its range in 1978, and remained available until 1981. This 1980 911 Targa didn’t start life at the RUF factory, with its first owner taking delivery from Porsche in Koln, Germany. He immediately dispatched it to RUF with orders to upgrade the car to 911 SCR specifications. Cosmetically, this entailed adding the appropriate front valance and alloy wheels, but that owner decided to pass on the distinctive Whaletail rear spoiler. It is a genuine survivor that retains its original Grand Prix White paint. A close inspection reveals a small array of chips and marks, but retaining the car as a survivor is an appropriate choice. The panels are straight, and there is no evidence of rust. The glass and Black Targa top look excellent, and the beautiful wheels are free from stains and physical damage.

The 1980 Porsche 911 SC was a very respectable performer from the factory. Its rear-mounted air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine sent 185hp and 195 ft/lbs of torque to the road via a five-speed manual transaxle. A ¼-mile ET of 14.9 seconds and a top speed of 140mph cemented its credentials. However, RUF increased the bore size and compression, pushing the engine’s capacity to 3.2-liters. The exercise was worthwhile, because power jumped to 215hp, while torque climbed to 207 ft/lbs. The gains slashed the ET to 14.3 seconds, while the top speed climbed to 158mph. The seller indicates that this 911 is in excellent mechanical health. The six fires into life at the turn of the key, settling into a smooth idle with no smoke or odd noises. The transmission and clutch work as they should, making this SCR a turnkey proposition for its new owner.

While it is best to consider this Targa as a survivor, its interior features a more modern radio/CD player in place of the factory stereo. I can’t spot any further additions beyond the beautiful leather-wrapped RUF wheel and RUF mats. The overall presentation is above average for a vehicle of this vintage. The Black leather seatcovers have typical wrinkles and creases, but no significant wear or other problems. The carpet is excellent, as are the dash and pad. The driver monitors the car’s health and progress via crystal clear gauges, while occupants will welcome the power windows.

One advantage potential buyers face with this 1980 Porsche 911 Targa SCR by RUF is that the tuning company is still operating. It may be able to check its records to confirm the authenticity of this classic. The seller has listed it here on Facebook Marketplace in Spokane, Washington. The price of $92,500 is well above the market average for a standard 911 Targa, but it is consistent with what buyers might expect to pay for a “standard” 911 SCR by RUF. The potential exclusivity increases its desirability, but is that enough for you to pursue it further?

I owned a 1980 SC.. you really want the G50 transmission and coil overs, but other than that, they are great cars.
